Self-esteem gardening By LEEANNE SHNAYER As a member of our Red Bluff Garden Club, I had the privilege of tak- ing home some left over greens collected by other members for our annual Scholarship Christmas Boutique held each December. Elderly club members and residents of rest homes received arrange- ments at the end of the sale to brighten their hol- idays. All proceeds from the boutique go towards scholarship funds benefit- ing our local youth. Working together for a few days was a chance to get to know my fellow members and to enjoy a variety of music and camaraderie. I had never worked with greens before and asked how to get started. I was informed, "Just start!" Therefore, I did. Wow! I learned that building bouquets are an incredible way to build self-esteem. Each time I walked into the sales room with a freshly built bouquet, I heard positive remarks. Even when I was unsure of something, one woman reassured me that maybe I did not have a common choice of material but that someone would espe- cially like it. I was taught how to make bows and found I enjoyed using my dexterity to create big beautiful ribbons. Other members asked me to make one for them. Last night I kept the greens in my bathtub and worked on several bou- quets. I will give them away to neighbors who will probably send on a donation to the club even though the sale is over. The one I will keep in my house is the smallest, arranged with all the tiny scraps left over from my leftovers. I am awed at the beauty and remember that I made it. (The arrangement, not the greens.) The same self-esteem builder goes with garden- ing in general. People will feel so welcomed when they ride their hors- es through a shaded path entrance to our future dressage and jumping arena. I think about my wonderful partnership with my husband when I remember we planted them together, each of us using our special skills. I chose the tree, he dug the hole. I put the tree into the ground and he filled the hole. We put the weed cloth down and covered the area with big rocks. He put in the drip system. Planting trees means we need to water them in a drought area but many trees bring the rain. We admire the forest we planted by our front door, including interest- ing trees like scarlet oak, ginko and camphor besides other evergreens ready for collecting my own greens to share in a few years. One of our members gave me a list of trees to plant here in Red Bluff. I am assured that they will survive our hot sum- mers. They are Bay and other laurels, Cedars especially Deodora Spruce that has the added rosettes. Arizona Cypress has a great grey tone and is a good interesting filler. Spruce, Scotch pine and Thuja are also good materials. Juniper is a strong center stalk and good for swags but be careful of fire danger, as they are highly com- bustible. These trees are all available at our local garden center. The Red Bluff Garden Club is affiliated with Cascade District Garden Clubs, California Garden Clubs, Inc. Pacific Region Garden Clubs and National Garden Clubs Inc. In the military Courtesy photo Kaila C.
