Flashdance the Musical comes to t he Givens Performing Ar t s Center on
Nov. 14. It is a t ale about dreams, hard work, love and hope.
It is a stor y about much more t han just great dancing. "I love t he
Flashdance stor y. I t hink a lot of people don't really realize what t he stor y
is about . It 's about a girl who want s to go to ballet school. She doesn't
want to be famous, she doesn't have t hese out landish dreams, she is just
a hard work ing girl who want s to go to ballet school. It s about blue collar
workers, hard work ing people t hat just want a lit t le more and I t hink
we all have t hose dreams. It 's a f un stor y," said Hannah MacDonald who
plays Gloria in t he show.
MacDonald's character, Gloria, also has a relat able stor y, but her
dreams are even bigger. "Gloria is t he character t hat does have t hese big
out landish dreams. She want s to be a pop st ar; she want s to be famous,"
MacDonald said.
Gloria is a wait ress at t he local club and all she want s is to dance up
t here w it h her f riend — but no one t hink s she has t he t alent . So Gloria is
st uck in t he posit ion of watching her f riends dance while she wait resses.
"She goes t hrough t his arc in t he stor y where she ends up at a seedy
st rip join but her f riends and boy f riend come and rescue herm,"said
MacDoanld. Now, I can't really relate to dancing at t he seedy st rip joint
dow n t he road but I t hink we all have dreams. I'm an act ress so obv iously
I'm someone who has big dreams."
MacDonald's dreams st ar ted as soon as she could walk . According to
her parent s, she was a performer f rom t he ver y beginning. "I was always
a ver y t heat rical k id. W hen I was t hree years old I k new I wanted to be
on Broadway. W hen I was grow ing up, at ever y family f unc t ion people
were gat hered around me performing. I did communit y t heat re grow ing
up, and I st ar ted work ing professionally when I t urned 18. It has been
somet hing t hat has carried me t hrough my whole life. There was never a
quest ion about whet her I would do t his," she explained.
Touring has it s dif f icult ies. The cast of ten st ays in hotels, af ter
t raveling for hours. It is always physically t r y ing. However, for
MacDonald all t he hours spent away f rom home are wor t h it . She says,
"It s incredibly rewarding to be able to tour. We've been on t he road
maybe 10 days and I've already got ten to see so much of t he count r y
t hat I wouldn't have been able to see if I wasn't on tour," she said. "It s
also rewarding to be able to bring t his stor y to so many new audiences.
We all live in New York Cit y so we can see t hese huge incredible t heat re
product ions whenever we want so it 's excit ing to be able to bring t his to
ot her par t s of t he count r y t hat might not have t hat access. And I get to
meet a lot of new people and f riends."
