SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Ted Ginn Jr. could only watch the NFC championship with a bum knee, see- ing Mario Manningham catch a key touchdown pass for the New York Giants and his replacement punt returner for San Francisco botch two returns that ultimately led to the 49ers' loss. After testing out free agency, Ginn is back for another season in San Francisco and ready to take back his role as returner. He gets to play with Manningham, too. The 49ers signed Ginn to a one- year deal Thursday hours after offi- cially announcing the addition of Manningham with a two-year con- tract. The team later announced it signed quarterback Josh Johnson to a two-year deal to back up Alex Smith. Ginn visited Detroit, Minnesota and Baltimore before staying with a 49ers team that has already added Manningham and Randy Moss to a thin receiving corps. With those two newcomers, along with Michael Crabtree back, Ginn might not get a whole lot more chances to catch the ball this year. ''I was happy with my role,'' he said. ''When you're playing a game like this, you have to be a team player. That's what I am first. Everybody wishes they could get a ball or two more. That's being a human being.'' Ginn had 19 catches for 220 yards last season and just 31 in two years with San Francisco when his biggest contributions came as a returner. He averaged 23.6 yards per kick return and 12.7 on punt returns with three total touchdowns. His absence was felt during the NFC champi- onship game when Kyle Williams' muff set up Manningham's go-ahead touchdown catch in the fourth quarter and his overtime fumble led to the field goal that sent the Giants to the Super Bowl with a 20-17 win. It all provided a crushing end to what had been a spectacular season for the 49ers. ''Everybody said it's Kyle's fault. But that's not right. It's a team game,'' Ginn said. ''I talked to him that day. I tried to tell him to keep his head up and stay positive.'' Williams and Ginn are part of a much-improved group of receivers from the unit last season that had only player, Crabtree, catch more than 20 passes in the regular season. Manningham agreed to the deal last Saturday when the 49ers were in the thick of the race to sign Peyton Manning, the four-time NFL MVP and older brother of Manningham's former quarterback with the Giants — two-time Super Bowl winner Eli Manning. Manning ended up signing with Denver and the Niners brought back Smith. ''I wanted to go there and I knew that Peyton Manning was going to go somewhere. I thought he was coming to the 49ers but he didn't,'' Manning- ham said. ''He went to Denver. Good luck to him with that. I wish the best for him. We got Alex Smith and I know he's a great player. ''I knew (playing with Manning) was a possibility but I wasn't picking them because of that. I know Peyton See 49ERS, page 2B 63 64 57 44 66 81 68 58 Sports 0 Red Bluf 4 Paradise f By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor Sparked by the production of junior varsity callup Jared Poore, the Spartans ran their win streak to nine games, Thursday, with a 4-0 win over league rival Paradise. Poore who was called up to the varsity team on Wednesday was given the start in right field and made the most of it — driving in two of Red Bluff's runs. "I didn't really feel any pressure I just went out and played my game," Poore said. "Iwas nervous, but..." But, it didn't show. At least not for long. Poore came up for his second plate appearance with Colin Igarta in scoring position and proceeded to rip an RBI single to score him. The run put Red Bluff up 3-0 in the fourth inning, but the Spartans and Poore weren't done. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Wyatt Houghtby was hit by a pitch and and stole second base. Igarta beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners and once again the sophomore came through. This time he drilled a deep fly to right field allowing Houghtby to easily tag for the final Spartans' run. "We sit there and watch them all the time and now to be a part of it —it's incredible, it's awesome," Poore said. Robby Lasby picked up the win for Red Bluff. He pitched all seven innings, walking four, hitting two more batters, but allowing just two hits all game. After being hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first inning, Sinclair stole second base. Robinson drew a walk and both runners advanced a base on a passed ball. Lasby then flared a ball into shallow right field that fell in and allowed Sinclair to score for the game's first run. Sinclair led off the third inning by tattooing a curve ball to right field for a standup triple. Two batters later Modesto Ramirez doubled to roughly the same spot to drive in Sinclair. Ramirez finished the game 2- for-3. The Spartans improved to 10-2 with the win and 2-0 in league play. They head to Sacramento, Satur- day, to take part in the Raley Field High School Baseball Series where they will play Rio Linda at 7:30 p.m. at the home of the River Cats. Red Bluff returns home for a 4 p.m. game Tuesday against Ore- gon's Newberg. While the nine-game win streak has been nice, there's still a sense there's room for improvement for the Spartans, who were recently ranked by the Record-Searchlight as the top Division-I team in the section. "We've been coming out kind of flat lately," Sinclair said. "We've really been playing in the field ok — we need to eliminate the errors, but in a whole we've been playing really good right now." 49ers sign Mario Manningham Rockets rout GS HOUSTON (AP) — Rookie Chandler Parsons had 20 points and a career- high 11 rebounds, leading the Houston Rockets to a 109-83 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night. Goran Dragic added 17 points and nine assists for the Rockets, who dominated the Warriors inside, outre- bounding Golden State 48- 31 and scoring 58 points in the paint. Luis Scola scored 18 and Samuel Dalembert added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Richard Jefferson scored 14 points and David Lee added 12 for the Warriors, who've lost five of their last six games. The Rockets maintained their hold on the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference by beating Golden State for the 13th time in the last 15 meetings. The Warriors have lost seven straight games in Houston dating to Decem- ber 2007. The Rockets hit 11 of their first 14 shots, most of them from close range, to quickly build a 14-point lead. The Warriors gave away five turnovers in the first nine minutes to help Houston widen the gap. Scola started 5 for 6 from the field and flipped in an easy hook shot for a 30-16 lead. Golden State rallied in the second quarter against a Houston lineup of mostly reserves. Jefferson finished a fast break with a dunk and swished a 3-pointer during a 17-5 run that cut the deficit to 37-35.
