Among those students was Los Molinos High School's senior class president and FFA treasurer, Ryan Mekech. The Sacramento Leadership Experience is California FFA's capstone leadership conference for FFA members. Stu- dents are assigned a specific California district, and spend 4 days in Sacramento. During their time in Sacramento students learn and participate in how a bill becomes a law, the impor- tance of demographics to their specific region, dis- cuss senate bill proposals, work in committees to develop senate bills, debate senate bills in the state senate chambers, as well as meet legislators, legisla- tive staff, and other key stakeholders to the legislative process. Applicants must submit a detailed application con- sisting of three essay questions including future educa- tional and career goals, the student's perceived role of the State Government in the agriculture industry and major issues facing agriculture in California. "The selection process for SLE has a reputation for being very competitive," said Bonnie Baxter, LMHS FFA Advisor. "We are very proud that Ryan is repre- senting Los Molinos and Northern California for this event." Mekech is the first student from Los Molinos in over thirty years to be selected to attend SLE. Out of the 40 individuals selected to attend SLE, Mekech is one of six representing the Northern California Region, along with three from Grass Valley, one from Arbuckle and one from West Valley. The Corning Exchange Club was pleased to present certificates and gifts to four outstanding students selected by their respective schools to be students of the month for Feb- ruary. Exchange Club members would recognize and thank all dedi- cated teachers and involved parents that make it possible for children to learn and excel. She hope to attend college with the goal of becoming a doctor. Cas- sandra Sanchez, fifth grade at Olive View School and teacher Ms. Baci- galupi. Cassandra enjoys reading and playing games. She plans to attend Cal Poly and become a bio- medical engineer, and is working hard to achieve her goal of main- taining a 4.0 grade average at May- wood and Corning High School. Rogelio (Roy) Madrigal, a senior at Corning High School, and teacher Mr. Nelson. Madrigal has been a Cardinal football player for four years, and on the wrestling team for three. His goal is to attend Chico State and achieve a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. They received a certificate of recognition and pen and pencil set. The awards are given to the outstanding students at noon on the third Thursday of each month at the Red Bluff Elks Lodge.
