LosMolinosElementary School fifth grade teacher, Kristina Zarate, has been nominated for the 2015- 2016 national LifeChanger of the Year award. Sponsored by the Na- tional Life Group Foun- dation, the LifeChanger of the Year program rec- ognizes and rewards the very best K-12 public and private school educators and employees across the United States who are making a difference in the lives of students by exem- plifying excellence, posi- tive influence and leader- ship. Zarate, who was the Te- hama County Teacher of the Year for 2011-12, was nominated by Principal Jennie Bachmeyer. Zarate possesses the dedication and nurturing spirit that is the epitome of a professional educa- tor. She believes her stu- dents can accomplish any- thing they set their minds to and encourages a "yes, we can" attitude that reso- nates with her them. "Ms. Zarate is a true pro- fessional who is committed to ensuring that all of her students, many of whom come from low-income fam- ilies, succeed academically and socially," said Bach- meyer. "She is a life changer at Los Molinos Elementary." Zarate takes pride in seeing them grasp new concepts and appreciates seeing the increased confi- dence that comes from her students' learning achieve- ments. She thrives on the challenge of building self- esteem, improving work habits and developing sound young minds. Nominees must be full- time school employees. Award winners are selected based on the following cri- teria: A proven ability to make a beneficial differ- ence in the lives of students; an ability to positively add to the development of the school's atmosphere; is in- volved in leadership activi- ties at the school and com- munity level; a demon- strative record of excellent performance at the profes- sional level; a commitment to producing a nurturing atmosphere; adherence to high moral and ethical standards. Winners will be an- nounced in spring 2016. This year, a new prize, called the LifeChanger Spirit Award, will be given to the nominee whose community demonstrates the most support for his or her nomination. This global campaign generatespublicsupportfor high-quality early learning by mobilizing millions of children and adults in the world'slargestsharedread- ing experience. The campaign focuses on closing the word gap – a gap that often exists be- cause many children from low-income families hear up to 30 million fewer words than their more af- fluent peers by the time they enter kindergarten. Read for the Record highlights the importance of building the language and literacy skills which are essential for children to succeed in school and in life. This year, Jumpstart cel- ebrated the 10th anniver- sary of Read for the Record on Oct. 22 with the cam- paign book, "Not Norman: A Goldfish Story" by Kelly Bennett. Jumpstart is a national early education organiza- tion with vision to work to- ward the day every child in America enters kindergar- ten prepared to succeed - which is also the mission of the School Readiness program. Locally, 22 adults read to 815 children from 29 classrooms - with a total of 64 adults participating in the event.
