While we were granted non-profit status by the IRS, we had to make some ad- justments to our pa- perwork to satisfy the California Franchise Tax Board. I am grateful to the Foundation Group for their continued as- sistance in this process. I am positive we could not have done this on our own. It is a great learning experience, though, and I have found lately that life is full of great learning experiences — it's a more positive spin than road- blocks. A good friend of mine and one of the coordi- nators of the annual fun run fundraiser for Sacred Heart and Mercy High School, Allison Smith- Marshall, invited us to participate in their first Color Dash fundraiser. Shannon Gonczeruk put together a "Team Psycho" for us all to join. My fam- ily came all the way from the Bay Area to be on the team, and my sister-in- law, Ella, made all of our awesome shirts for us. With family and friends, there were 13 of us who made up "Team Psycho." I had never done a color run and was a bit appre- hensive. The thought of colored powder being tossed at my face freaked me out and made me think of coughing up blue loogies for a week. My mom got me a paper mask to wear, but I was more worried about looking like a dork than the blue loo- gies. I decided to run this 5K barefoot, and one of my little Psychos, Scott Brad- ley, decided he'd run it barefoot with me. We all made it, and I was pleas- antly surprised that very little powder made it's way into my lungs. The cool- est thing about the color dash was the wide variety of participant. It was not your typical run. It was a run/walk and it drew peo- ple of all ages from babies to senior citizens as well as folks of every size and ability. I was impressed with all the awesome par- ticipants. It was so much fun, that I'm sure "Team Psycho" will be back to run next year. While the color dash was a blast, I felt the need to tackle Mt. Lassen be- fore it closes for the sea- son. I asked Donelle Lazott if she was game. Of course she was. It was a bit overcast, but it seemed like a beautiful day. Luck- ily we both had long sleeve shirts or coats on. It was a bit chilly at the bottom. We figured we'd warm up as we started hiking. We made it to the top in no time. Enjoyed the view, snapped a few pics and headed back down. Soon into our descent, we noticed these small, white balls falling from the sky, pelting us in our faces. It was snowing, and it was cold. My ears were freezing. Being a smart little Eskimo, I tied my hair over my ears, un- der my chin and tucked it into my shirt. It wasn't cute, but it kept my face warmer. As we were head- ing down, we noticed at least 5 people heading up. Silly people. The following weekend, I was still in the mood for one last paddleboard- ing adventure. I called my trusty friend, Donelle and asked her if she was ready to do the final voyage, the one we kept putting off, the stretch from Los Mo- linos to Woodson Bridge. She reluctantly agreed and swore to me that I was trying to kill her with these adventures. My logic is, anyone who has done roller derby is game for anything. My dad dropped us off. It was overcast that day, and I was praying it wouldn't rain on us. We put in and immediately had to make a decision on which path to take. The current was too fast for us to pick any but the closest one to the shore. I made my way under the bridge first, it was rough going and missed a nasty log by inches. We made it onto smooth waters, and Do- nelle informed me that her board got turned around completely before she made it through. We noticed that we could have put in after the bridge. Hindsight sucks. The rest of our journey was wonderful, calm and beautiful. No further is- sues. We made it to Corn- ing in record time. Dad showed up right as we came to shore. If we get full dry suits, we may con- sider another trip or two this year, but on our pre- ferred stretch, from Diver- sion Dam to Los Molinos. Right now, I'm work- ing on a good fall adven- ture that won't freeze my tookus or scare Donelle off. I'm open to sugges- tions. I wouldn't be surprised to learn there's an old can of car wax hanging out in your ga- rage or base- ment. Now would be the time to find it, dust it off and hope it's not all dried out. I prom- ise that by the time you finish read- ing, you're going to be clamoring to put these tips to work. Prepare to be amazed. MIRRORS. There's nothing like a nice hot shower to steam up bath- room mirrors. Car wax is the secret to make them fog-free. Apply a small amount to the entire mir- ror and allow it to dry. Buff it away with a soft, dry cloth. TUB AND SINK FIX- TURES. No matter how water-spotted and dull your faucets and fixtures are, car wax will make them look like new — and help them stay that way. Rub a small bit of car wax into all of that metal and allow it to dry for a few minutes. Now pol- ish it away with a soft, dry cloth. The wax will pre- vent new water spots and keep those fixtures spar- kling. TOOL CARE. Say good- bye to rust on garden, ga- rage and auto tools when you apply a coat of car wax to all of the metal parts. Make sure you rub a lit- tle wax into the hinges and moving parts to keep them from jamming and sticking. OUTDOOR GRILL. Ap- ply a good coat of car wax to the outside of the grill to make it shine, repel wa- ter marks and make it much easier to clean in the future. Make sure the grill is not in the hot sun when you do this. SHINY TABLETOPS. Apply car wax to your plastic, laminate and For- mica tabletops. Wipe it on, then wipe it off to a beau- tiful shine! PATIO FURNITURE PROTECTOR. Whether yours is metal, plastic or molded vinyl, apply car wax in the same way you would wax your car to protect against rust, add shine and repel water marks. RUSTY RINGS. You know how cans of shav- ing cream, hairspray and other aerosol products can leave a rust ring when left in the shower, bath, garage or even the patio? Remove the rust easily with, you guessed it, car wax. WHITE RINGS. Some- one forgot to use a coaster, and their drink left a white ring on your beauti- ful furniture? No worries. Hit it with car wax. Rub it in with your finger until the ring disappears. Let it dry, and then buff it away. STICKY DRAWERS. And closet doors and win- dows, too. Rub a dab of car wax onto the tracks of those drawers, doors and sliding windows. Who knew that would make them move more easily? Now you know. BACKSPLASH. If you apply car wax to the ar- eas behind your stove and sink, grease and gunk will wipe off easily. Your kitchen will sparkle, too. PREVENT CORRO- SION. Wherever you see it — on the mailbox, door and window frames, out- door light fixtures, garage door mechanisms — clean the rust away with car wax. You'll automatically prevent further corrosion from weather and water damage. GRANITE AND MAR- BLE. Apply a coat of car wax to granite and marble countertops to fill in fine scratches and restore the glossy finish and shine. SNOW SHOVEL. Ap- ply two coats of car wax to your snow shovel be- fore you begin to clear the driveway and side- walk. The snow will not stick, allowing you to glide through the task. That's only a start for all the ways you can use car wax around the house. As for which car wax works best? I prefer Meguiar's Cleaner Wax because it cleans, polishes and leaves a beautiful finish — all in one step. Turtle Super Hard Shell Paste Wax is a fine choice, too, just know that you'll need to clean the surface before apply- ing the car wax. Would you like to send a tip to Mary?
