By Ronald Blum The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, MO. Johnny Cueto smothered the New York Mets with another big October outing. And the pesky Kansas City Royals kept foul- ing off Jacob deGrom's best pitches, wearing him down with persistence and prowess. Cueto never faltered. And as deGrom wore down, the Royals pounced. Eric Hosmer hit a tiebreaking, two-run single with two outs in a four-run fifth inning that included 14 foul balls, and the Royals rallied to beat the Mets 7-1 Wednesday night and take a 2-0 World Series lead. Nineteen hours after Hosmer's sacrifice fly won a 14-inning thriller, Cueto pitched a two-hitter, varying his delivery with occasional quick pitches and keeping the Mets off balance. An excited crowd stood on its feet for long stretches on the rainy night. Some fans wore wigs re- sembling Cueto's long, dark dread- locks — including the Royals' mas- cot, Slugerrr. THESCORE By Janie McCauley The Associated Press SANTA CLARA When it comes to any outside chatter question- ing Colin Kaepernick's support system in his own locker room, coach Jim Tomsula hardly ex- pects that would have been gen- erated within team headquarters from management or players. "That would be an absolute concern but I don't address those things," Tomsula said Wednesday. "I don't know where they come from. I don't believe it's coming from here." And Kaepernick certainly would like to think nobody is making him a scapegoat and plac- ing blame for all the struggles. "I really hope not. For me, I give everything I can to this or- ganization, I give everything I can to my teammates to try to help us win and to try to help us be bet- ter moving forward," Kaepernick said. "He's a good player and it's great to see him back out work- ing his way back from his injury," Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said. "We get a chance to now get him activated and go from working just with the trainers to working with the team and getting his RAIDERS Safety Allen close to being cleared to play The Mercy volleyball team will be hosting Chester at 6:30 tonight at the school's Senior Night.
