"We've held this event at the ca- sino since 2006," said Fernando Villegas, Tehama County Latino Outreach Past President. "It's a health fair for all Tehama County residents and surrounding com- munities. We partner with Roll- ing Hills Casino to offer the 24 booths with everything from free health screenings from the Vet- erans Service Office to Providing Essentials For Tehama Shelter (PETS) and social services. It's an event to help make our communi- ties healthier and teach our com- munity how to stay healthy and make a better lifestyle change." The board, in partnership with Tehama County Health Services Agency, Tehama County Depart- ment of Education, the Law Office of Ken Miller, Red Bluff Interiors, Downtown Business Association, Red Bluff Elks Lodge and both Corning and Red Bluff schools re- leased the balloons at noon down- town to celebrate the week. Red Ribbon week was first rec- ognized in California in 1985, ac- cordingtoaTehamaCountyYoung Marine presenting at the Red Rib- bon Week reception at the Tehama County Department of Education. More than 80 million people support the effort each year by showing the red ribbon and sup- porting the efforts to prevent alco- hol, tobacco and other drug abuse. The awareness campaign is ob- served annually in October. More than 50 business came out to support Red Ribbon Week and join as balloons were released, said John Gehrung of the Tehama County Health Services Agency Drug and Alcohol Division. The balloon launch started with the Post Office and moved down Walnut Street to Main Street and south to Antelope Boulevard. For more information, call 527-7893. For the second year running, the newest part of the competi- tion found in the Jr. Piano con- test saw success with 12 peo- ple entered in the 18 and un- der competition, Western Open co-Chairwoman Sharon Barrett said. There were eight fiddler divi- sions along with two divisions each of twin fiddler, flat-picking and jukebox as well as three ju- nior piano divisions and hot fid- dle and waltz divisions. Contestants were varied in age from the youngest, Kendall Harrigan, 4, of Willows on up to 88-year-old Les Tucker who hails from Woodward, Oregon, Bar- rett said. Home states included Montana, Minnesota, Washing- ton, Oregon and Nevada for con- testants while judges came from as far away as Nashville, Tennes- see. Kristen and Loren Alldrin of Palo Cedro had six children in just about every division, Barret said. The children range from 18-year-old Mackenzie down to seven-year-old Samuel with An- neliese, 15, Emily, 13, Olivia, 13, Naomi, 10, and Jillian, 10, in be- tween, Kristen Alldrin said. The whole family plays an instru- ment with their repertoire in- cluding fiddle, cello, viola, gui- tar, mandolin, piano, ukulele and percussion. "Our favorite thing to do is to play as a family, but this is good because it gives them a goal to work towards and it's good ex- perience to get on stage and play under pressure," Alldrin said. "There's a great group of people here we see every year."
