A DDD Delta Delta Delta At University Sing in the fall of 1969, Theta Iota members sang in four-part harmony, "Tri Delta true, we'll dream of you and love you." The chapter was awarded first in the sorority division of the competition and later the grand prize. In the spring of 1956, Tri Deltas were winners of the sorority division of Interfraternity Sing, which was the name of the contest during that time. Their song: Tri Delta True. The chapter's Vose baby grand was the instrument many gathered around for group practices, positioned as it was in the library, formerly known as "the social room". Recently, our beloved piano had deteriorated despite being tuned on a regular basis. During Saturday house tours conducted at last April's 100th anniversary celebration, some alumnae members heard about the piano's condition and how it was used infrequently. Debi Lauck Haymaker '75 took the message home with her. Her husband Bill Haymaker related the conversation. "Deb was aware that my mom, Jennie Madsen Haymaker '39, grew up playing the piano in her family living room before it arrived at the Chapter House. Deb was in Manhattan for the 100th celebration and called Saturday night with the news that the piano had been tuned that week, but it was doubtful that it would hold its tune much past the weekend. I responded that it was probably time for a new piano." As a result of Bill and Debi Lauck Haymaker's generosity, Theta Iota was the recipient of a lovely new Boston 5-foot-4 inch baby grand. Boston grands are built using specifications by Steinway, resulting in a Steinway-like sound. A wider case means that a baby grand of this size will have a fuller bass sound than what one might expect. The walnut satin finish blends nicely with the Chapter House furnishings. Traditionally, Kansas State living group singing contests were held either in the fall around Homecoming and or in the spring during a celebration of Greek Life. The contest likely began in the 1930s, with participation falling in the early 1960s. Changes were made to revive the competition, including opening it to all living groups, using it as a fundraiser and combining fraternities and sororities to create a mixed voice sound. The first year for the later may have been 1971, which was won by a combination of Tri Delta and Sigma Nu. A partial search of yearbooks produced the following years in which Tri Delta took top honors: 1953, 1957, 1969, 1970, 1971, and 1972. These represent the issue of the yearbook rather than the year of the contest. Collegiate members of past years also enjoyed their piano by playing duets, singing together for fun, listening as a Tri Delta sister played, or the piano was used to practice for a music class. On occasion, a parent sat at the piano, entertaining those in the room. It is the hope of the Haymakers that todays' collegians will also enjoy the instrument and make their own memories. Theta Iota House Corporation desires to commemorate their gift with a brass plate on the piano. The donors have requested the following verse be used: Tri Delta true, We'll dream of you and love you, When college days are o'er. Note: We invite you to add to our list of years in which Tri Delta won honors in these contests. Please provide Anne Schlaegel Otte '70 or Laura Anderson Pestinger '76 with your information.
