A As Theta Iota enters its second century, House Corporation members work toward making the Chapter House the safest, most welcoming, beautiful, and well-functioning on campus. Quite a goal for an 85-year-old structure! Following another successful recruitment that resulted in another highly-regarded new member class, the commitment of our collegians and alumnae set the pace for our ongoing responsibilities. As reported in the spring newsletter, repair of part of the roof became urgent following heavy spring rains. In July, work was completed on the north slope only on the traditional section of the house, costing $49,500. The red tiles were removed and carefully stacked and stored, underlayment was repaired and/or replaced, and the tile put back in place. This unscheduled project was possible due to a combination of Centennial silent acution proceeds, House Corporation savings, careful budgeting, and a housing grant from the Tri Delta Executive Office. It's our earnest hope that the south slope of the roof will not demand such work for at least a few more years, which will allow time for project savings to begin to recover. The safety of our collegians living in the Chapter House is our top priority. Gone are the days when our students were all home by 10 p.m. and the house doors locked for the night. Although our Chapter House is locked 24 hours a day, today's college students are out and about at all hours and need a reliable method of quick and safe entry. Over the years, our chapter, like most others, has utilized key, electronic card, and most recently push-button code entry systems. For several years, members of the House Corporation watched the development of fingerprint identity entry systems. Such systems are already successfully in use at several other chapter houses at K-State and our collegians have requested that we consider installing one. Recent research estimates that the cost to incorporate a fingerprint entry system on at least three main doors of our house would cost $10,000-$15,000. At this time, this expenditure is not possible, but we do believe that it needs to be among our top priorities. If this is a project that you would like to expedite, your contribution would be greatly appreciated. Please note the enclosed pledge card. We invite and welcome alumnae who have been out of school at least five years to join us on House Corporation. We meet at the Chapter House once a month, and often utilize computer contact for those out of town members unable to attend. If you have an interest in contributing some time toward the support of Theta Iota, please contact me or any of the current House Corporation members. Your participation would be much appreciated, and we look forward to sharing our sisterhood with you in this way.
