BASEBALL Red Bluf 11f Las Plumas 4 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor The Spartans took advantage of a winless Las Plumas team, Tuesday, during an 11-4 victory that was some- times ugly, but in the end extended Red Bluff's win streak to eight games. Tyler Reed pitched four strong innings for the Spartans and got on base four times at the plate to lead Red Bluff. It appeared as if the Spartans were going to cruise to a mercy-rule win after they piled on five runs in the first inning. Evan Sinclair opened the game with a walk, moved to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a wild pitch. Cole Robinson then singled and Modesto Ramirez clubbed a double with a bit of a lucky bounce off the third base bag. Robby Lasby drew a walk to load the bases and Robinson scored on yet another wild pitch. Reed drew a walk to reload the bases and Tyler Boone ripped an RBI single to push across another run. Two batters later Mitch Fox hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score another run and Colin Igarta capped the inning with an RBI single. But the Spartans lost some mental focus starting in the top half of the sec- ond inning when they committed three consecutive errors to help Las Plumas load the bases. The Thunderbirds would work two runs out of the inning. Red Bluff got them back in the bot- tom half of the second. Robinson got his second single of the ball game and stole second base before Ramirez drove him home. A couple batters later Reed drove in Taylor Figgs, pinch running for Ramirez. That made it 7-2. Red Bluff picked up three runs in the fourth inning after Lasby and Reed opened the inning with back-to-back walks and Wyatt Houghtby and Igarta drove in runs. Boone took over for Reed on the mound in the fifth inning and Las Plumas took advantage of a couple of walks to cut the lead to 10-3. working Tuesday night to finalize a three-year con- tract, a person with knowl- edge of the negotiations said. Las Plumas also picked up a run in the sixth inning. Fox pitched the seventh inning, hit- ting two batters, before getting the final out. SOFTBALL 4 Las Plumas 1 Red Bluff Haley Harris hit the first pitch of the game for a home run as Red Bluff won at Las Plumas, 4-1, Tuesday, behind a strong Megan McColpin pitching per- formance. From the moment he crouched to catch his first bullpen at Scottsdale Stadi- um, to when he faced live batting practice at last, and even when he did nothing more than emerge from the dugout carrying his gear. It didn't matter where he was or what he was doing, the Giants eagerly watched his every move right along with the fans. Posey's long-awaited return from season-ending leg and ankle injuries suf- fered in a frightening home- plate collision last May 25 with the Marlins' Scott Cousins is the story for San Francisco as the club begins the 2012 season. Coco Crisp can already envision a little more than two months from now when the dreadlocked star might be swinging for the fences in the heart of Oakland's bat- ting order. Catcher Kurt Suzuki thinks about it. So does pitcher Dallas Braden and all the others, including Ramirez himself, of course.
