Richard Bull '43, who was initiated in the midst of unsettled World War II times. Dick was a National Honor Society graduate of Columbus West High school in 1942. A Phi Psi friend of his sister introduced him to the Chapter and he soon found camaraderie among bothers in the uncertainties of their impending military service. Soon after initiation, Dick was inducted and sent to Army Air Corps flight school in Alabama, and then joined the 38th Bomber Squadron as a B-24 pilot flying missions in the Pacific theatre. He developed a deep rapport with the crew he commanded and they remained in touch after the war. On cessation of hostilities in 1945, Dick flew with the 7th Emergency Rescue Squadron in Hawaii until his discharge in June 1946. He returned to enthusiastically participate in Ohio Delta and continue his education, culminating in a degree in communication in 1950. While in college, he flew P-51's with the Air National Guard, which brought him fame in the Chapter for escapades like a low-level flight over a recruitment party at the Timmons farm. Dick was pinned to his Alpha Phi sweetheart, Shirley Austen, who required him to decide between her and the Air Corps, although he still builds model planes. They were married upon Dick's graduation in 1950 and recently celebrated their 65th anniversary. Dick had an auspicious career in building the industry-leading Nationwide Insurance empire. Right out of college, he joined the Farm Bureau Insurance Company and soon was tapped as executive assistant of its charismatic president, Murray Lincoln. He and Shirley accompanied Lincoln and his successors as they traveled extensively, developing Nationwide into the commanding presence it is today. Dick held the post of executive vice president until his retirement. He served on the boards of many civic organizations and was a founding member and officer of the Upper Arlington Rotary. Dick was active in the Ohio Delta Company for more than 40 years, sometimes serving as president, and also developed promotional materials for its Amici '63 campaign and other Fraternity events over the years. Dick and Shirley have two children and four grandchildren, including a Miami University Phi Psi. They live at First Community Village in Columbus, along with Pat Doyle '43 and Dave Timmons '49, who enjoyed recalling college and alumni experiences with Dick for this article.
