Ontheair yourteamdoes. I thinkat the end of the day we go out there and control what we can control. So I don't think I think about either of those guys very much." Seattle's chance at a third straight trip to the Super Bowl is in jeopardy. Since 1990, only 14 of 168 teams to start the season 2-4 have reached the play- offs, and none has reached the Super Bowl, according to STATS. Here are some things to watch for as the 49ers host the Seahawks on a Thurs- day night for the second straight year: TURKEY TALK Seahawks cornerback Sherman chomped on a turkey leg while cradling the game ball in his right hand in a Thanksgiving night cele- bration on the 49ers' home field 11 months ago. San Francisco CEO Jed York even apologized for his team's poor play on Twitter. "Yeah, I don't really pay much attention to the pompanstance around it," Tomsula said, then quickly caught himself. "Here I am making up vocabulary again, the Pittsburghese coming out." BOWMANCOMEBACK Line- backer NaVorro Bowman hasn't faced the Seahawks since going down with a devastating left knee in- jury in the NFC champion- ship game in January 2014. He not only needed surgery but missed all of 2014. Bowman had 15 tackles last week playing 77 snaps, prompting Tomsula to say the Niners need to get him some breaks. "It looks like he's the leader out there," Carroll said. "He's as tough as you can get, instinctive, and he looks like he's back play- ing football the way he's always played. It's a great tribute to him battling to get back. It was a real dif- ficult injury and I felt terri- ble about him getting hurt, but thrilled to see him back out there battling." MOBILE WILSON The 49ers' defense has been tested by strong-armed quarterbacks Ben Roethlis- berger and Carson Palmer, and mobile ones like Aaron Rodgers. Next up: do-it-all Russell Wilson. "A good thing about our schedule is we faced a bunch of big-armed quar- terbacks, and we've actu- ally faced a couple quarter- backs that can scramble as well," cornerback Kenneth Acker said. "You know at any point, Russell Wilson can break out of the pocket and a receiver's going to go deep, you know that every play could be that big play." WAGNERRETURNS Seattle will have starting middle linebacker Bobby Wagner back after he missed Sun- day's loss to Carolina with a pectoral injury. Wagner was hurt the prior week against Cincinnati trying to make a tackle in the first quarter on Marvin Jones, initially thinking it was just a cramp. "I'm excited to get this team going in the right di- rection," Wagner said. FIX THE FOURTH Over the past three games, the Se- ahawks are being out- scored 40-3 in the fourth quarter and overtime. Af- ter matching a franchise record with a 17-point fourth quarter collapse in a loss to Cincinnati — and vowing it wouldn't happen again — the Seahawks blew a 23-14 lead in the final 12 minutes against Carolina. Seattle is being out- scored 55-27 in the fourth period this season — a big change from a year ago when the Seahawks were plus-55 in point differen- tial in the final quarter. APSportsWriterTim Booth contributed to this report. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 with an ace and six assists; Mariah Castle with eight digs, a block and five kills; Brenna Johnson with seven assists; Mikayla Burreson with two blocks and Kay- lee Shoemaker with four digs and eight kills. "We will continue to ad- just and build," Albee said. The Cardinals, 10-16 overall and 2-3 in league play, are scheduled to host West Valley, 23-3 overall and 5-0 in league play, at 6:30 tonight. Roundup FROM PAGE 1 open with a bases-clear- ing double off Kelvin Her- rera in the sixth, giving him seven RBIs in the se- ries. Edwin Encarnacion had walked with the bases loaded against Edinson Volquez, who seemed flus- tered by a couple of close calls against the Royals. Kansas City totaled 22 runs and 30 hits in the first two games in Toronto, but Estrada faced the mini- mum 20 batters before Lo- renzo Cain walked with two outs in the seventh. Closer Roberto Osuna was perfect in the ninth. Yordano Ventura will start for the defending AL champions on Friday in Game 6 against David Price, the Game 2 loser. Estrada, a 32-year-old free-agent to be, kept the bullpen door closed for most of the afternoon, a day after Kansas City romped 14-2 in a game that saw infielder Cliff Penning- ton pitch in the ninth. "This time around I had a better fastball com- mand," said Estrada, who gave up three runs in the opener. "That was the key to this game." Toronto is trying to be- come just the 13th team to rally and win among 80 who trailed 3-1 in best-of- seven postseason series. It has happened four of 17 times in the LCS, including when the Royals bounced back against the Blue Jays in 1985 en route to Kansas City's only World Series ti- tle. In this year's best-of- five Division Series, To- ronto fell behind 0-2, then won three straight against Texas. Before 49,325 roaring fans, Chris Colabello's solo homer into the left-field seats in the second gave Estrada a lead. It was the only mistake by Volquez, the Game 1 winner. Estrada didn't make a miscue until Salvador Perez homered with two outs in the eighth. Estrada retired his first nine bat- ters, ending at four Alcides Escobar's record streak of leading off playoff games with hits. Escobar, who entered 9 for 15 (.600), got Kan- sas City's first hit when he opened the fourth with a ground single past a diving Tulowitzki. Ben Zobrist promptly grounded into a double play to second baseman Ryan Goins. "He was really good to- day," Escobar said. "He threw the ball down, down and away, down and in. He didn't miss many pitches today." Kansas City had no other runners until Cain walked with two outs in the seventh. Price was up in the bullpen, but Estrada got Eric Hosmer to fly out. Volquez allowed just two singles after Colabello con- nected but lost the strike zone in the sixth. Ben Revere led off with a walk and Volquez hit Josh Donaldson with the first pitch. In August, Volquez hit Donaldson in a testy game that included a benches-clearing scrum. He then walked Jose Bautista in a 10-pitch at- bat on a knuckle curve that looked to get a piece of the plate. "I thought the pitch to Bautista was definitely a strike," Royals manager Ned Yost said. Yost shouted from the dugout for Perez to appeal to first base on ball four, thinking Bautista may have swung. But it was too loud. York's array of power arms, and Murphy swinging a hot stick that made him the MVP of the matchup. Manager Terry Col- lins' team advanced to the World Series for the first time since they lost to the crosstown Yankees in five games in 2000. They will face Toronto or Kansas City in Game 1 on Tuesday night — the Royals lead 3-2 in the ALCS. The Cubs, meanwhile, still haven't won the crown since 1908. Manager Joe Maddon's wild-card bunch surged into this series, but was overmatched. When Dexter Fowler looked at a called third strike for the final out, Jeurys Familia dropped to his knees in front of the mound and then hopped up for a hug from catcher Travis d'Arnaud. They were soon joined by the rest of their jubilant teammates in the infield grass at Wrigley Field. A small, but vocal group of New York fans behind the visiting dugout then chanted "Let's go, Mets! Let's go, Mets!" Right when it looked as if his historic streak was com- ing to an end, Murphy con- nected for a two-run drive to center against Fernando Rodney in the eighth in- ning. The second baseman raised his right arm as he rounded first after his sev- enth homer of the playoffs. Murphy, who was tied with Carlos Beltran for the postseason homer streak, finished with four hits and batted .529 (9 for 17). Duda doubled twice and d'Arnaud also homered for New York, and Bartolo Co- lon pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings for his first play- off win since 2001, for Cleveland at Seattle. The 14 years, 12 days between postseason victories for the 42-year-old right-hander snapped the major league record of exactly 14 years for Milt Wilcox, according to STATS. Colon, who made 31 starts this season, re- placed rookie Steven Matz with two out in the fifth and runners on first and second. He struck out Kris Bryant swinging on a 3-2 pitch, preserving New York's 6-1 lead. Bryant hit a two-run homer in the eighth, but it was way too late for Chi- cago in its first appearance in the NLCS in 12 years. The Cubs shut out Pitts- burgh in the wild-card game and eliminated rival St. Louis in the division series, but were unable to mount much of a challenge against the Mets' talented pitching staff. The Cubs also loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth, and only came away with one run on Kyle Schwarber's grounder to first. Starlin Castro lined right to third baseman David Wright on a hard smash for the first out. NLCS FROM PAGE 1 | SPORTS | REDBLUFFDAILYNEWS.COM THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2015 2 B
