MERCY 3, WESTWOOD 0 The Mercy Warriors beat the 10-8-1 Westwood Lum- berjacks Friday in a non- conference road match, 25- 21, 25-19 and 25-15. No stats for the match were posted as of Tues- day. The Warriors, 12-8 over- all and 2-1 in league play, were scheduled to host the 10-8 Liberty Christian Pa- triots on Tuesday. Volleyball FROM PAGE 1 do," Kaepernick said. "I do have to go out and perform better." Kaepernick has done ex- actly his past two outings, including a season-high 340 yards Sunday in a 25- 20 win over the Baltimore Ravens. He has two touch- down passes and no inter- ceptions in the 49ers' past two games, dating back to their 30-27, last-minute loss Oct. 11 at the New York Giants. When it comes to the Se- ahawks, however, Kaeper- nick has struggled — and so have his teammates. Overall, Kaepernick has threetouchdownpassesand nine interceptions against Seattle, with two lost fum- blesanda54.1passerrating. He's averaged 160.2 passing yards and 57 rushing yards per game. Of the nine intercep- tions, four were by Rich- ard Sherman, who also fa- mously tipped one to Mal- colm Smith in the end zone with 22 seconds left in the 2013 season's NFC Cham- pionship Game at Seattle. Sherman is still looking for his first interception this season, and although the Seahawks blew fourth- quarter leads in their four losses this season, Kaepe- rnick doled out praise for their top cornerback. "He's a great player. He does a lot of things well," Kaepernick said of Sher- man. "I wouldn't say there's been a change in his game. He been out there doing what he does, and he does a great job of that." Although the 49ers are passing for the league's fourth-fewest yards per game (202.8), Kaepernick and the offense have shown improvement the past two games. Kaepernick has lined up under center more in those games, speficially 69.5 percent of the time, as opposed to 12.1 per- cent through the first four games, according to Pro- FootballFocus.com. "It puts any quarterback into a rhythm and gives them a chance to look at the entire defense, instead of having to look down to catch the ball," offensive coordinator Geep Chryst said. Kaepernick downplayed those visual benefits, stat- ing: "There is a split sec- ond where we have to catch the ball. But defenses can't move too far while you're catching it." Anquan Boldin, Kaepe- rnick's leading receiver, is dealing with a hamstring injury and could be limited Thursday. If so, the 49ers could use Quinton Pat- ton more to complement starter Torrey Smith. Pat- ton scored his first career touchdown Sunday. "I've always had a good relationship with him, a good feel for him as a route runner," Kaepernick said of Patton. "He plays very fast and he's very fearless when he's on the field. He's some- one I feel can be very reli- able for us." Tight end Vernon Davis hasn't produced much in the 49ers offense the past couple years, nor against Seattle since this rivalry heated up in 2011. Davis does, however, have the 49ers' last 100-yard re- ceiving game against the Seahawks, in 2009. Davis had no receptions Sunday while playing al- most twice as many snaps as prescribed in his return from a knee injury. "He's been out there moving well and looks like he's ready to play," Kaepe- rnick said. "We're very for- tunate to have him back and excited to have contri- butions from him." 49ers FROM PAGE 1 BEN MARGOT — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS San Francisco 49ers cornerback Kenneth Acker (20) runs with an interception in front of Baltimore Ravens tight end Maxx Williams (87) during the second half Sunday in Santa Clara. day. Kansas City led 5-2 in the seventh before break- ing away. Blue Jays infielder Cliff Pennington relieved in the ninth inning, becom- ing the first primarily po- sition player to pitch in the postseason, STATS said. Greeted by cheers, he al- lowed two hits and got one out. Kansas City can win the pennant Wednesday, when Edinson Volquez starts against Toronto's Marco Estrada in a Game 1 re- match. "It's a do-or-die game for us," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "But they do it all year. I think these guys will let this one go and they'll show up to play tomorrow. ... I know these guys will be ready." After flashing power to build a 5-0 lead on the long ball, the Royals returned to their pesky ways late in the game against the Blue Jays' struggling bull- pen. They scored nine runs with three more sacrifice flies, a barrage of slashing hits and heads-up baser- unning. "We were really focused on being productive col- lectively," Rios said. "And I guess we're doing a pretty good job of doing that." Blue Jays fans had seen enough after Cain's two- run single in the eighth, turning their ever-opti- mistic cheers to jeers when Mark Lowe replaced Ryan Tepera. The 36-year-old Chris Young bested Dickey, 40, in a bookish matchup of veteran starters — only the pairing of the Yankees' Randy Johnson and De- troit's Kenny Rogers in the 2006 ALDS tops the duo for combined age. But just like his counter- part's effort in Game 4 of the Division Series against Texas, the 6-foot-10 Young was lifted one out shy of qualifying for a victory when Ned Yost went to his bullpen with a runner on first with two outs in the fifth. Yost wasn't willing to take any chances against Josh Donaldson, who al- ready had an RBI double. Dickey never had a chance to get that first playoff victory in a 13-year big league career. Escobar got a hit lead- ing off for the fourth straight game, starting this one with a bunt down the third-base line. Zo- brist connected for his first homer of the ALCS. Rios homered against his former team in the second for a 5-0 lead. Af- ter Dickey hit Escobar with a pitch — a call that needed replay review to get it right — he walked Cain one out later and was done after 1 2-3 innings. Young used that steep arm angle to outwit the powerful Jays, who were 53-28 at home in the reg- ular season but just 11- 14 with the roof closed — which it was Tuesday. He held them hitless un- til Ryan Goins' one-out sin- gle in the third. Donald- son drove him home with a ground-rule double down the left-field line on an 83 mph slider. Jose Bautista added an RBI grounder to close the gap to 5-2 and get those white towels twirling at Rogers Centre. But Luke Hochevar, Ryan Madson, Kelvin Her- rera and Franklin Morales shut down the Blue Jays the rest of the way. Kansas City's four-spot in the seventh to made it 9-2. Escobar and Hosmer had sacrifice flies to deep center, Cain singled to ex- tend his postseason hit- ting streak to 13 games and Alex Gordon scored on Te- pera's wild pitch. Cain hit a two-run single in the eighth, and Escobar drove in two off Penning- ton in the ninth.
