ByMatthewPennington The Associated Press WASHINGTON U.S. is ready to negotiate with longtime adversary North Korea as it has with Iran, but Pyongyang has to be serious about abandoning nuclear weapons, President Barack Obama said Friday. Obama was speaking after meeting with South Korean President Park Geun-hye, a close ally, who echoed the U.S. leader's view. The North has con- ducted three nuclear tests since 2006 and is develop- ing a mobile ballistic mis- sile that could potentially hit the U.S. Obama said Iran had been prepared to have a "serious conversation" about the possibility of giving up the pursuit of nuclear weapons. He said there's no indication of that in North Korea's case. "At the point where Pyongyang says, 'We're in- terested in seeing relief from sanctions and im- proved relations, and we are prepared to have a se- rious conversation about denuclearization,' it's fair to say we'll be right there at the table," Obama told a joint news conference. Park's visit follows heightened tensions this summer at the heavily mil- itarized border between the two Koreas, and spec- ulation that North Korea could be planning another rocket launch into space or a nuclear test explosion. In a joint statement is- sued after Friday's meet- ing, the U.S. and South Ko- rea said that if North Ko- rea takes such a step, "it will face consequences, in- cluding seeking further sig- nificant measures by the UN Security Council." The statement also said they would never accept North Korea as a nuclear weap- ons state. Park has cultivated closer relations with China as she looks to coax Beijing away from its traditional embrace of Pyongyang. Last month, she prompted handwringing in Wash- ington when she attended a Chinese military parade marking the end of World War II that was snubbed by leaders of most major de- mocracies. But Obama said he had no problem with Park meeting Chinese Presi- dent Xi Jinping, and joked that Xi "was in this room, eating my food," during a state visit to the U.S. last month. "We want South Korea to have a strong relation- ship with China, just as we want to have a strong re- lationship with China. We want to see China's peace- ful rise. We want them to be cooperating with us in putting pressure on the DPRK," Obama said, refer- ring to the North's official title, the Democratic Peo- ple's Republic of Korea. NEWS CONFERENCE Obama: If NKorea serious on nukes, we'll talk By Suzan Fraser The Associated Press ANKARA, TURKEY Turkish jets shot down an unidenti- fied drone that flew into Tur- key's airspace at the border with Syria Friday while Syr- ian troops under Russian air cover were pressing their of- fensive against rebels in cen- tral and northern Syria. A U.S. official said the drone was Russian, but Moscow strongly denied ownership. The drone was shot down after it ignored three warn- ings to leave, the Turkish military said, but didn't specify how it had relayed the warnings to the opera- tors of the drone. Turkish Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioglu said the drone crashed two miles in- side Turkish territory. "We have not been able to estab- lish who the drone belongs to, but we are able to work on it because it fell inside Turkish territory," he said. Turkey earlier this month had complained about two incursions by Russian war- planes, which also drew strong condemnation from Turkey's NATO allies. The United States, Rus- sia and the Syrian govern- ment all operate drones in the region. The drone was definitely not American, and the U.S. believes it was Russian, said a U.S. defense official, who was not authorized to dis- cuss details of the incident and so spoke on condition of anonymity. In Moscow, a senior mili- tary officer strongly denied that the drone was Russian. "I state with absolute responsibility that all our drones are either perform- ing tasks or staying at the base," Col.-Gen. Andrei Kar- tapolov of the Russian mil- itary's General Staff said at a meeting with foreign mil- itary attaches in Moscow. The Lebanon-based pro- Syrian Al-Mayadeen TV quoted an unnamed Syr- ian military official as say- ing that no Syrian or Rus- sian warplane or drone was shot down over Turkey. The official added that Syrian or Russian warplanes or drones did not violate Tur- key's airspace. Seeking to soothe Tur- key's anger about the viola- tion of its airspace by Rus- sian aircraft, Moscow sent a high-level military dele- gation to discuss moves to prevent such incidents in the future.
