ByMarilynAdams WhenIwasyoung there were no microwaves or containers of instant coffee. Some of you read- ing this will smile, oth- ers won't be able to relate to not having either. We live in a fast paced soci- ety. We have convenience stores, and drive-throughs to buy food already pre- pared and ready to be consumed. Yet behind it all, there is someone who had to prepare it for us. The Bible talks about things that are instanta- neous. We read about it in the first book. Gene- sis 1:1-3 says, "In the be- ginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and dark- ness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, 'Let there be light'; and there was light." It was instanta- neous. Then He created the earth, the seas, all crea- tures great and small, the vegetation, the sun, moon, stars, and seasons. Next He created man. Gene- sis 2:7 says, "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nos- trils the breath of life; and man became a living be- ing." God then planted a garden and put the man in it to keep it. Gene- sis 2:9 says, "And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil." God told the man he could eat of everything in the gar- den except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He was expressly told not to eat from it. Then God created woman. Genesis 2:21-22 says, "And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man." Adam and Eve dis- obeyed God and ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They sinned against God, and their sin was passed down to you and me. Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Sin sep- arates us from God. Ephesians 4:17-19 de- scribes that separation as futile thoughts, under- standing darkened, alien- ated from the life of God, hearts are blind, and to- tally enslaved to sin. Yet God has a marvelous remedy. The same God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, can shine His light into your heart and bring in- stantaneous transforma- tion. How? Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eter- nal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Jesus died on the cross to pay the full pen- alty of your sin. He died in your place. When you believe that for yourself, and receive His forgive- ness for your sins, you will have that gift of eter- nal life. Instantaneously you will be transformed. No longer will you be alienated from the life of God, but you will be able to receive His life within you. Colossians 1:13-14 says, "He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have re- demption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins." The moment we be- lieve and receive His gift, we are instantaneously transformed. 2 Corinthi- ans 5:17 says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have be- come new." The moment you per- sonally accept what Jesus did for you on the cross, you will instantaneously receive His gift of ever- lasting life. Ephesians 1:13 says, "In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gos- pel of your salvation; in whom also, having be- lieved, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise." Those who be- lieve are sealed for eter- nity. MarilynAdamsaccepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in 1958. A debilitating accident in 1977 radically changed her life. Through that crucible of affliction, the Lord wooed her into intimacy, teaching her timeless truths that sustain her, and permeate her teachings. QUAKERS Seminarondealingwith death offered in Chico By Alicia Rancilio The Associated Press NEW YORK Oprah Winfrey is hoping people will find common ground, no matter what or who they believe in, with her new documentary series "Belief," about how religion is viewed across the globe. "We live in a world where when your belief isn't the same, you literally can get your head chopped off," she said at the series' premiere Wednesday in New York. "What I know in my ma- turity is that the real pur- pose of being human be- ings on the planet, we are all different in search of the same thing," Winfrey said. "We're all yearning for the same thing but we have dif- ferent ways and different approaches to doing that. That's what being a human being is." "Belief" premieres Sun- day on Winfrey's network OWN. It took three years to produce as filmmakers trekked to various coun- tries to capture people with varying perspectives and experiences with religion and spirituality. "It's like a big ole commu- nity gathering around the world in a way that people just don't do on television, so I'm pleased that I was able to get it done," Win- frey said. The event was attended by many of Winfrey's sup- porters and collaborators such as director Ava Du- Vernay, actor and recording artist Common and "CBS This Morning" co-host and Winfrey's long-time friend, Gayle King. "This is a landmark se- ries. It did for me what hap- pened for me the first time I watched 'Roots,'" said Du- Vernay. "It changed what I thought my position was in the world. ... It really got me thinking about things and trying to understand things that I hadn't really delved into myself."
