Write-in Candidate _____________________________________ Your Name ___________________________________________ Helping Hand of Theta Chi Influences Ted Peters '74 T here was a mix of lessons—big and small—that Ted Peters '74 took away from his time at Theta Chi. The mix of people, from athletic to studious, made an impact on Ted as he listened to and learned from the men of Alpha Mu. "In Theta Chi I learned there was a time to work and a time to play. Grades and academic performance were important and there was always someone who would help you out. I learned that other people's needs come first— the helping hand was not just a phrase, guys lived it. I learned that when someone needed to step up it should be me—to lead, to help, to follow. I learned how to be a friend because I had so many in Theta Chi." "The brothers who were just a year or two ahead of me really knew what they were about and knew how to go about getting what they wanted. Guys like my pledge dad, Ted Hovda '73, and Gene Warren '73 and Mark Benda '73 were willing to go out of their way to help the rest of us. During that time of life, especially in the 1970s, it was easy to get sucked up into a cause or to be totally oblivious to it. The guys who were a little older than me seemed to help the rest of us balance things out while understanding that there's more to life than the next physics test." Professionally, Ted took these lessons and his degree in forestry, with a wood technology speciation, to a career working in wood composite panels in facilities spread across the Midwest and southeastern United States. He is now a quality manager at an oriented strand board mill in Alabama, leading the company's efforts to meet customer needs for structural and industrial panels. Ted and his wife, Barbara, who got engaged on the way to VIESHA during the spring of 1975, still make it a priority to come back to Iowa State and to Theta Chi. Though they make their home in Cullman, Alabama, their fall schedule is planned around the alumni weekend, and each year it is a time to reconnect with brothers while enjoying the events and being on campus. Ted and Barbara have two children, Liz and Joel. He can be reached at tpeters@usachoice.net. http://isuthetachi.org Theta Chi Fraternity - Iowa State @ISU_ThetaChi FIND US ONLINE f l 8
