ByJosefFederman The Associated Press JERUSALEM Palestinians carried out three stabbings Monday in Jerusalem, leav- ing a teenage Israeli boy in critical condition, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu angrily accused the country's Arab leaders of helping incite weeks of violence. Two of the attack- ers, both teenage boys, were killed. In a fiery speech at par- liament, Netanyahu ac- cused Arab parties of "un- dermining" the country. He called on Israel's Arab cit- izens to "kick out the ex- tremists among you." Netanyahu spoke on an- other bloody day, the lat- est in a monthlong wave of Israeli-Palestinian vio- lence. In a new setback for ef- forts to restore calm, the Quartet of Mideast media- tors — the U.S., the U.N., the European Union and Russia __ postponed a trip to the region. Edgar Vasquez, a spokesman for the State De- partment's Bureau of Near East Affairs, said it was at the request of the Israeli government due to the cir- cumstances. Israeli police reported three separate stabbings across the city, including an assault by two attackers in the east Jerusalem area of Pisgat Zeev. Police said the pair seriously wounded a 20-year-old man before at- tacking a teenage boy on a bicycle. The boy was critically wounded before police shot and killed one of the attackers, while the second was run over by a car. Ab- del Nasser Manasra, a rela- tive of Ahmed, 13, and Has- san, 15, said both were cous- ins. He did not know which had been killed. Other attacks occurred in Jerusalem's Old City, where a 17-year-old assailant was killed, and outside the na- tional police headquarters. The attacker, identified as a 16-year-old girl, was shot and wounded, while a po- lice officer was lightly hurt. The unrest began last month with clashes at Je- rusalem's most sensitive holy site and quickly spread across Israel and into the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Five Israelis have been killed in stabbings, a shoot- ing and a stoning attack on a moving vehicle, while at least 25 Palestinians, in- cluding 10 attackers, have been slain. Several Pales- tinian children, including a 2-year-old girl killed with her mother in a Gaza air- strike, have been among the dead. Hundreds of Palestin- ians have been wounded in clashes with Israeli troops in the West Bank. The stabbings have rat- tled Israel. The attack- ers, many of them teenag- ers, have had no affiliation with militant groups, and the seemingly random na- ture of the stabbings has made it difficult to predict or prevent them. Netanyahu has come un- der heavy criticism for fail- ing to stop the violence, and an opinion poll this week showed that more than 70 percent of the public is dis- satisfied with his handling of the crisis. The violence erupted over the Jewish New Year last month, fueled by ru- mors that Israel was plot- ting to take over a site holy to both Muslims and Jews. The rumors ignited clashes between Israeli po- lice and Palestinian activ- ists who hurled stones and firebombs at them from in- side the mosque, and the vi- olence has spread. WEEKS OF VIOLENCE Netanyahu accuses Arabs of incitement amid violence By Albert Aji and Sarah El Deeb The Associated Press DAMASCUS, SYRIA Rus- sian jets intensified their airstrikes Monday in central Syria as gov- ernment forces battled insurgents in a strategic area near a rebel-held province and a govern- ment stronghold. The government push is the latest in a bid to regain the Sahl al-Ghab plain, which is adjacent to Latakia province, a stronghold of President Bashar Assad and the Ala- wite religious minority to which he belongs. After a heavy barrage of Russian airstrikes, the fighting was focused on the village of Kfar Nabu- deh, which officials said had been seized by govern- ment troops. Activists said Syrian rebels repelled the attack. Capturing Kfar Nabu- deh would cut off a major highway, giving the pro- government forces access to the northwestern prov- ince of Idlib. A rebel co- alition that includes the al-Qaida-affiliated Nusra Front drove Assad's forces out of Idlib in September, in a major setback for the government. Their hold on the province threatened Latakia. The Russian Defense Ministry said it has struck 53 alleged Islamic State targets in the past 24 hours, destroying com- mand centers, ammuni- tion and fuel depots as well as training camps al- legedly used by foreign militants. The ministry said the IS positions were in the central provinces of Homs and Hama, as well as in Latakia and Idlib. IS has a limited presence in Hama, away from where the fighting has been con- centrated. Russia insists it is mainly targeting the IS group and other "ter- rorists," but the multi- pronged ground-and-air offensive is being waged in areas controlled by main- stream rebels as well as the Nusra Front. The gov- ernment ground offensive began on Oct. 7, a week after Russia began its air- strikes. The Britain-based Syr- ian Observatory for Hu- man Rights said at least 30 airstrikes were car- ried out in Kfar Nabudeh, while government troops and Lebanon's Hezbollah fighters entered the vil- lage from the south. An- other activist-run moni- toring group, the Shaam News Network, said the insurgents ambushed government forces inside the village, which is re- portedly laden with tun- nels. The Syrian military said in a statement that it took control of the village of Kfar Nabudeh and others nearby. Most show- ers will be concentrated along and just ahead of the front, which extends from the central Appala- chians to the western and northern Gulf Coast. A separate pocket of clouds and showers will brush part of northeastern New England. Much of the balance of the nation can expect dry weather and sunshine. Cooler air that arrived over the northern Plains on strong winds during Monday will spread to the Midwest and Texas with a breeze.
