KimDavis, clerkof Rowan County, Kentucky, has been jailed by run- away Judge David Bun- ning. Davis has refused Bunning's re- peated or- ders to is- sue licenses for same sex couples to marry. Conser- vative call her a martyr be- cause she cites religious reservations as her motiva- tion. Progressive types call her a hypocrite as she has been married several times and unwittingly issued a li- cense to a transgendered couple. As usual the pro- gressives have it all wrong, but the conservatives are only half right. The progressives are out to lunch because Davis' multiple marriages have no bearing on same sex marriage. They are in ac- cordance with Kentucky law; meanwhile nothing in the scriptures forbids re-marriage once the di- vorce is final. God hates di- vorce, not marriage. She is a new Christian whose di- vorces occurred before her faith in any case. And she can hardly be condemned for something she did not know she did. Conservatives miss the mark when they make it all about Davis' religious con- victions. She does indeed oppose same sex marriage on faith-based grounds. But this is a question of secular law; Davis was sim- ply upholding the law. The Kentucky legal code states marriage is between one man and one woman; no alternative license can be issued under that code. Federal laws and court de- cisions cannot supercede state laws of this kind un- der the Tenth Amendment to the federal Constitution. Justice Kennedy admits as much in his majority opin- ion. Kennedy says the Con- stitution requires a legis- lative solution to what he calls the injustice of exclud- ing gays from marriage. He then states that this issue is so important the court changes the laws anyway and unilaterally. His rul- ing is itself utterly illegal and state officials have ev- ery right to ignore it if they have the courage to do so. Davis has shown that kind of courage. My question is why are Kentucky Christians not battering down the doors of the jailhouse in order to join Davis behind bars? Many conservative crit- ics say this is the wrong time and place. Talk show host Michael Medved — who I greatly admire — is one of the more promi- nent people wishing Davis would just go away. Per- haps there are people bet- ter qualified to be the first martyr sacrificed on the altar of the perversion of marriage. But my under- standing has always been that God chooses the un- likely to be heroes so the likely ones will have no reason for boasting. He chose an uncouth shepherd boy named David — with a proclivity to mul- tiply his wives and elim- inate rivals — like their original husbands — by vi- olence. David replaced Saul who had all the right cre- dentials except the heart after God that God so prizes. He always seems to choose the son (Matthew 21:28-32) who after saying no to his father goes and obeys anyway. He has little use for the son who prom- ises obedience and then finds reasons to delay un- til it no longer matters. Kim Davis has said yes to the Lord — in the context (perhaps) of limited under- standing. But she said yes and she deserves more sup- port from the rest of us than mere admiration; she certainly deserves more than our clucking tongues and critical words. There is a lot of crime and a lot of criminals in our land right now. Like so many of the kings of Israel they care for neither God nor man; they do what- ever seems good to them in any given moment. The largest class of criminals in this land right now — posing the most danger to the most people — are in government. Justice Ken- nedy — and Judge Bunning — are nothing more than criminals. Their distinction is that they break laws un- der color of authority. They need to be stopped in their tracks by an aroused pub- lic. Yet it is not acceptable to stop them by any means. Their anarchy will only be compounded by citizen an- archy. We do need to rec- ognize and embrace the re- ality that our mundane re- sponsibilities toward our families and communities are meaningless if those families and communities are crumbling around us. We need to drop the good causes we serve in favor of the cause served by proph- ets like Nathan, Elijah, and John the Baptist as he an- nounced the arrival of Mes- siah. We need to join Paul and Silas (Acts 16) in that jail cell and sing the praises of the Lord until He re- leases all of us. We need to remember He loves judges like Bunning and Kennedy as much as He loves us. We need to rejoice (Matthew 10:32) that when we ac- knowledge our Christ and King before men He will surely acknowledge us be- fore His Father. GODTALK Kentucky county clerk martyred on marriage altar The Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff will again wel- come the Kirkin' o' the Tar- tan and the Jefferson Pipe Band at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 25. The celebration cere- mony has become an an- nual event in memory of the Scottish Highland- ers. The Kirkin' o' the Tartan became known in the United States when the Rev. Peter Marshall presented the first Kir- kin' in 1941 at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. Marshall was a U. S. Senate chaplain and pas- tor of the New York Ave- nue Presbyterian Church. Marshall used this cere- mony to promote solidar- ity among American-born and native-born Scots who once again faced conflict, in the form of World War II. In 1746, Scottish people were denied the right to wear the kilt, plaid, or any tartan garment. Bagpipes as well were banned, and defined as a weapon. This went on for almost 40 years. During that time if any Scottish people in the high- lands disobeyed the law, they were persecuted. The women of the high- land clans, whose men were far from home, would take a small piece of their tar- tan (clothing) to the kirk (church) to be secretly blessed, and to pray for heaven's protection for their clan and its members. They kept those small pieces of fabric in their pockets so they could quietly pass them to the minister for prayer. The Jefferson Pipe Band brings a dynamic atmo- sphere to the service, as the Scottish pipe music em- braces the original mean- ing of the Scottish tradi- tions and the movement of Christians during hard times. Hearing them is a renewal of optimism dur- ing today's difficult times. The public is invited to attend this dynamic event. Those who attend are welcome to wear plaids representing clans, or plaids of choice in ac- knowledging the events of the day. The Rev. Beth Hoyt will be conducting the service. Worship starts at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 25, at the Presbyterian Church, 838 Jefferson St., Red Bluff. By Ivan Moreno The Associated Press DENVER A graduate of a Colorado university who wanted to cite the names of Bible verses on a do- nor nameplate in a foot- ball locker room sued his alma mater for rejecting the request. Michael Lucas wanted the plaque recog- nizing a $2,500 donation he made to be inscribed with "Colossians 3:23" and "Micah 5:9," but not the language from them. The Colorado School of Mines said the inclusion of the verse names would violate the separation of church and state, according a law- suit filed in Denver federal court. Lucas argues that it constitutes private speech protected by the First Amendment. The univer- sity said it is disappointed the former football player sued and disagreed with his claim that it restricted his free-speech rights. For his donation, Lucas was getting one of 130 person- alized plaques in the locker room of the school's new athletic facility.
