The Kings led 99-94 with 4:38 remain- ing but managed only one basket the rest of the way, that coming on Sergio Rodriguez's uncontested layup with six seconds left. Ellis dominated his matchup against Evans most of the night but really took it to the front-runner for the NBA's Rookie of the Year award in the fourth quarter. Ellis scored the first seven points of the period then added four more down the stretch, including a driving layup that gave the Warriors a 100-99 lead with 2:51 remaining. After Jason Thompson was called for a charging foul with 1:05 left, Morrow made a 3-pointer to extend Golden State's lead. He didn't return, finishing with six Warriors rally from 18 down to beat Kings Daily News photo by Rich Greene Corning's Cameron Nye drives to the basket, Friday, in front of Central Valley's Kody Corbell. By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor CORNING — Central Valley's Carlos Mancasola controlled the sec- ond semifinal of the Corning Shootout, Friday, making seven 3-pointers on his way to 33 points, but ultimately it was Corning's Tyler McIntyre's lone two points that made the difference. McIntyre stroked a pair of free throws with 59 seconds remaining to break a tie game and complete a Cardi- nal comeback as Corning advanced to tonight's 5:30 championship game with a 56-51 win over the Falcons. The Cardinals had trailed by as many as eight points as Marcasola sunk three after three and the rebound- ing of Dakota Bearquiver gave the Fal- cons an early lead. Trailing by six at the third quarter buzzer, Corning's Milo Martinovich tipped back a ball in a swat that resem- bled more of a volleyball move than a basketball shot. Martinovich then opened the fourth quarter with a more conventional put- back, part of his 13-point performance, as new life was breathed into the Car- dinals. Throughout the game every time Corning would cut the deficit to two points, Marcasola had an answer, but that changed in the final period. With Central Valley's Bearquiver dealing with foul trouble, the post cleared for Luis Piseno, who scored eight points down the stretch on h is way to 15 for the game. Corning's last rally was ignited by Cameron Nye, who grabbed a defen- sive rebound then sprinted down the court to convert a fast break basket. Nye was fouled on the play as well and his free throw cut the lead to two points. After Marcasola made a sophomore mistake with a traveling call, Piseno came back to tie the game. A minute later, McIntyre found himself under the basket and Corning's brickhouse guard, powered up to earn a trip to the free throw line. Ryan Holland almost sealed the game twice for the Cardinals during the final minute, tipping away passes, but was unable to grab the ball before it went out of bounds. The Falcons couldn't get the ball to Marcasola to take their final shot and instead Christian Spaschak missed a 3- pointer. Martinovich and Piseno iced the game with three free throws. With 18 points, 11 coming in the first half, Nye led the Cardinals offen- sively and kept them close enough for the comeback. Corning will play Trinity, who defeated Orland 63-55, tonight in the championship game.
