It was postponed for one week because on the day it originally was to be shown, a Virginia television reporter and cameraman were killed during an on-air report — and because of a similar element of that season finale, it was deemed inappropriate to show it that night. If your television provider has an On Demand channel that includes pro- grams shown on USA, the episode still might be available there as you're reading this. Q : We would like to know why, when a late-night show is rerun, they show one that is several days to a week old. Jay Leno did this, Jimmy Kimmel does, and so does Jimmy Fallon. Is there some reason they can't show an older show? — Jean Barth- els, Columbia, Mo. A : Well, they could, of course — but a huge factor is the topicality and timeliness. Clearly, the hosts' monologues are written to re- flect events of the day ... and the farther an episode gets from its original air date, the more dated it seems. Even a couple of weeks later, it's still reasonably current, though any news story mentioned likely will have advanced al- ready in "real time." Another aspect is the timeliness of the projects the guests are promoting. With a narrow window between the original airing and the repeat, chances are good the given movie still will be in theaters or the TV show still on the air, thus making the talk-show episode still relevant to view- ers who might not have seen it the first time.
