California'sAdmis- sion Day — September 9 — was the day Nehemiah completed a fifty-two day build- ing project of restoring the city wall around Jeru- salem after the Jews re- turned from their Babylonian exile. It was a great day to call the state — at least the people of God in the state — to a day of repentance con- stituting a re-focus on the God who has so blessed California. Once upon a time the people knew. The preamble to the California Constitution says, "We, the people of the State of California, grateful to Almighty God for our freedom, in order to secure and per- petuate its blessings, do establish this Consti- tution." If we trace the timeline from Septem- ber 9 back fifty-two days we land on July 20, the anniversary of the first manned landing on the moon. Neil Armstrong said on that day, "One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind." When he became a be- liever in Christ Arm- strong came to believe his own words even more fervently than be- fore. Here hangs a tale. When representatives of California, Oregon, and Washington met in Olym- pia last June our shared intention was to address a supernaturally driven drought in our three states in 2 Chronicles 7:13- 14 terms. We shared a strong affinity for Nehe- miah — the leader who taught his people to stand their ground with sword in one hand and mason's trawl in the other — pre- pared to build and de- fend what they built at the same time. As we prayed and worshipped together we discovered a shared conviction that fifty-two days of prayer and fasting — from July 20 through September 9 — was the best way to launch what we named a Trifecta of Re- pentance. California would hold her day September 9; Oregon on the 10th, and Washington on the 11th. Later Alaska and British Columbia came aboard as partners; their days were celebrated on September 12th and 13th. Approach- ing a Biblical crisis with a Biblical remedy would in- deed be a small step for (each) man and a giant leap for mankind on the West Coast. I have visited Fiji and Hawaii's Big Island where ecologically dead reefs were resurrected after pe- riods of prayer and repen- tance. I have seen a pol- luted stream restored in Northern California and dry rivers erupt from un- derground springs after intense prayer; droughts have twice been broken in the past two decades when humble prayer begged God and meteo- rologists predicted con- tinued dryness. It is well known in prayer circles that certain sin patterns literally pollute the land — as when Abel's blood cried out — while sus- tained repentance can move God's heart to re- store normal rainfall just as it is written in 2 Chronicles. The plan was this: Cal- ifornia Christians would hold Solemn Assemblies from Noon to three in Room 437 and from three to five in Room 127 of the state capitol. We will re- pent for the historic sins of shedding innocent blood, covenant breaking, sexual sin, and idolatry. It was a joyous yet utterly sol- emn undertaking because we knew the call to repen- tance was not a call for punishment but for privi- lege — the greatest privi- lege ever bestowed. Mixed in with the repentance were reconciliation activ- ities with Native Amer- icans as well as Black, Asian, and Hispanic peo- ple. The most important — and the most joyous di- mension — was the mo- ment when the log has been removed from our eyes as we abandoned these sins and we could once again focus our at- tention on the loving gaze of our Lord. What He does or delays on the drought — the physical and the spir- itual — is His business — even in the wake of the Day. It is our business to re-dedicate our lives to liv- ing in His company. Delegations from Oregon and Washington joined us in California. Some of us from California accompa- nied these delegations as we all moved on to Salem for the Solemn Assembly outside the capitol in what is called David's Tent on the 10th. We continued on to Olympia on the 11th for their Solemn Assembly in the large hearing room in the capitol basement. We prayed with the people of Alaska and British Colum- bia on the 12th and 13th as we made our return to Cal- ifornia. As we continue build- ing this west coast wall of prayer and repentance we focus on three things. This is only the beginning, we stand on each others' shoul- ders, and we serve the God of More. Nehemiah's wall paved the way for Temple and Torah restoration. All the players were essential to the full revelation being revealed. And God is ever ready and willing to deliver more than we asked. This day was no exception. GODTALK California Admission Day a great day for repentance Cone Grove Park sets the scene for a Parish Mass and picnic for Sacred Heart Church Sunday, Oct. 11. Mass begins at 10:30 a.m. followed by fun and food. Find breakfast burri- tos, hamburgers, hot dogs, water and soda supplied by parish groups. Bring a side dish or salad or dessert. No glass is al- lowed in the park. Load up those lawn chairs and pic- nic blankets and get ready for a time of prayer, relax- ation and fellowship at the park. No masses will be held in the church on Sunday, Oct. 11. The Saturday schedule of 5:15 p.m. in English and 7 p.m. in Spanish remains the same. SACRED HEART Mass and picnic in the park on Oct. 11 By Brady Mccombs The Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY The Mor- mon church's renovated history museum set to re- open this week features a small and surprising dis- play about an uncomfort- able part of the faith's his- tory that for generations has been glossed over: po- lygamy. The display is tucked in- side a modern revamped museum that tells the story of how the church was founded and formed in the eastern U.S. from 1820-1846 before Mormons trekked across the country to set- tle in Utah. Inside a spe- cial 220-seat theater, visi- tors can watch a theatrical dramatization of founder Joseph Smith's much-dis- sected visit from God and Jesus in 1820 in the woods of upstate New York that led to the foundation of the re- ligion. The decision by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to provide more details about what is known as this "first vision" and acknowledge the early days of polygamy — a prac- tice that has been outlawed by the mainstream church since 1890 — marks the lat- est illustration of the reli- gion's push for transpar- ency over secrecy when it comes to its history and be- liefs, religious scholars said. "The fact that this is go- ing to be deeply embedded in this kind of official nar- rative at the church's sig- nature museum is signifi- cant," said Patrick Mason, associate professor of reli- gion at Claremont Gradu- ate University in Califor- nia and Howard W. Hunter Chair of Mormon Stud- ies. "This is where Mor- mons take their kids. This is where Mormon youth groups go." The museum is in down- town Salt Lake City near the religion's much-vis- ited flagship temple, where thousands of out-of-town visitors and Mormons from all over the world come to visit. The exhibit opens on Wednesday after being closed one year for renova- tions. At a ribbon-cutting cer- emony Tuesday, top-rank- ing Mormon leader Jeffrey R. Holland said the first mu- seum revamp since 1984 shows the religion's com- mitment to documenting and honoring the faith's his- tory. He said many Latter- day Saints will have a spir- itual experience seeing ar- tifacts that include clothes worn by Smith's brother Hyrum Smith when the two were killed by a mob in 1844. Holland said the po- lygamy display was in- cluded because "plural marriage was a fact of life for the early Mor- mon church." "It wouldn't be much his- tory in this church if that were not acknowledged," said Holland, a member of the faith's governing body called the Quorum of the Twelve. "It's not a princi- pal part of the exhibit, but we acknowledge that was a fact for some years in the church.' The reopening comes nearly a year after the church published an essay documenting that Smith had a teenage bride and was married to other men's wives during the faith's early polygamous days. That online article was the first time the Salt Lake City- based religion had officially acknowledged facts long documented by historians, though it also had not de- nied them.
