Before the begin- ning of the fourth week of OctNov, all true believers must eat at least one wild persimmon to test whether it is sugary sweet or whether the alum content will still suck the spit out of your mouth. Just like Mom cries poignant tears at her baby leaving for college, so the faithful of OctNov begin to water at the eyes by the time day 29 approaches. While we know that anksgiving will follow the end of OctNov and Decem- ber will bring its own celebration, the marrow in the bone of our lives has been sucked from the core for another year by the time November 15 fades to black night. Sometimes, if parishioners find themselves in close proximity to one another, a somewhat subdued cel- ebration of thanks might take place on the night of November 15. But nothing mutes the truth...we hurt that soulful hurt of a good thing gone.
