John Miller, head coach for the past two seasons, stepped down to spend more time as a teacher on the Salisbury High School campus. Hein, who has headed the junior varsity team since 2008 is also the varsity girls track and field head coach. He was hired by the district in 2000 after graduating from Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo. "His enthusiasm, experience and ability to connect with kids will serve him well as he looks to build this program," Red Bluff principal Patrick Gleason said. A history teacher, Hein attended high school at West Valley. He coached the Class of 2013 seniors at the junior varsity level and produced a 5-3-2 record with them. The three losses came by a com- bined 10 points. In an interview with the Daily News, Friday, Hein said he's worked his whole life to become a teacher and coach. He thanked Miller and his staff for their dedication over the past two years and the school administration for giving him the opportunity. While Hein is a familiar face, having been associated with either the freshmen or junior varsity teams since 2000, he said expectations especially those within the program Hein are about to change. "I've never had the chance to put my stamp on it and expand on my ideas," Hein said.. His main focus will be creating a collective sense both within the pro- gram and out. "Over the past few years or so, we've kind of lost our sense of pro- gram — of a full three-level varsity, junior varsity, freshman football pro- gram," Hein said. "I think we need to focus on getting that back for the high school and the community as well." The Spartans last made the play- offs in 2004. Since then Red Bluff has gone 18-52. They Spartans have lost their past 25 games outside of Division-I bottom-dwellers Oroville and Las Plumas. Hein said he believes the entire community can be involved in improving football in Red Bluff. "Red Bluff is a football town. People love football in Red Bluff," he said. Hein said he hopes to build a bridge between the Jr. Spartans pro- gram and the high school program to improve the continuity of the lev- els. One idea he hopes to set in place as early as this summer is a Jr. Spar- tans football camp, staffed by the varsity coaches and players. Over and over again Hein spoke of raising the expectations within the program — starting with the coach- es and including himself. After that, Hein said he will raise the expectations of players, around the idea of what it means to be a football player at Red Bluff High School. He said he's already spoken to some of his players about what's to come. "I've told them the way we've been doing it hasn't been working," Hein said, adding some of his new ideas may not be liked at first. But while those new ideas may not be popular, Hein said he's sure of something else the current players don't like. "They don't like losing either." Hein expects to run a Stack-I base offense along with different packages with the primary focus on establishing a run game and control- ling a game's tempo. He was less sure on what his defense will look like and said those two ways. 1B Weekend March 10-11, 2012 Hein to lead Spartans "They give trophies out. They give cham- pionships out. They play playoff games for a reason. We want to get Red Bluff back to this point." — Red Bluff head coach Corey Hein answers will come in the following weeks when his staff is hired. Hein was vocal on saying the Spartans need to play disciplined and sound fundamental football regardless of what scheme they use. Red Bluff is expected to return all-league defensive lineman Bran- don Ragone and honorable mention wide out Mitch Fox next season. Quarterback Garrett Sandow saw plenty of action as a junior as well, giving Hein a core group of players he is familiar with. "I know what these guys are capable of ," Hein said. Red Bluff returns to a more tradi- tional Eastern Athletic League in 2012 after two years of a North and South split. Hein said he will judge success in "No. 1 is that (players) had a good experience," he said. "That they learned what it is to compete, to be a part of a team and to sacrifice for other people — what it is to be rewarded for your hard work." The other goal? That's to win some football games. "That is ultimately the goal. They give trophies out. They give champi- onships out. They play playoff games for a reason. We want to get Red Bluff back to this point." Posey caught two innings and hit a flyout in his only trip to the plate, while Sanchez was 1 for 4. As for Sanchez, the Giants were happy to get him back into the lineup, but the true test of his surgically repaired shoulder will come when he is ready to play in the field.
