SEPT 30 - OCT 6, 2015 UCW 25 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Today, it is almost impossible to not know either personally or through friends, someone who has dealt with breast cancer. Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. The damaged cells can invade surrounding tissue, but with early detection and treatment, most people continue a normal life. The Facts • One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women. • Each year it is estimated that more than 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. • Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 410 will die each year The Hope Unlike years past, breast cancer is not an automatic death sentence. It is a disease, which if caught early and treated properly can be stopped. It is also a disease, which is no longer said in a whisper. Instead, women are openly talking about it. They are sharing their stories and taking strength from not only their fight, but their survival. Annually literally thousands of events are held to show not only the soldiarity of women in this fight, but also their strength. And part of their strength comes from their ability to keep a sense of humor in the face of their adversary. Bras for A Cause is a national movement that supports women in creative and powerful ways to take on the disease, including unique fundraiser events, valuable awareness initiatives and incredible teamwork. This year, Bras for A Cause is bringing art to Gallery 208 to raise money for the Cape Fear Valley Cancer Center. On Tuesday, Oct. 6, Up & Coming Weekly and Women's View are joining the fight against breast cancer, as they host and evening of Artful Bras on display. In an effort to promote breast cancer awareness "Artful Bras" are submitted fully decorated as original works of art. Each bra is unique, entertaining, humorous and beautiful. Artful Bras are created to memorialize one who has been lost to breast cancer, in honor of a breast cancer survivor or as a message of strength and hope to those brave women who battle this horrible disease. All bras will be on display at Gallery 208, located at 208 Rowan Street; online at WomensViewNC.com and on the Women's View FaceBook Page. Of course, the event will not succeed without support of the community, its submissions of "Artful Bra Projects." To participate in the event, each participant is asked to submit a size 36C underwire bra, covered entirely (excluding straps), with anything and everything from fabric, feathers, fringe and paint! All bra submissions must be named, fully decorated and hung on a padded hanger. If you have a story or dedication to someone special you would like included with your bra please provide that information printed on a separate card and attached to the hanger when you submit your bra. Decorated bra submissions need to be turned in at the Up & Coming Weekly Office/Gallery 208 at 208 Rowan Street through Friday Oct. 3. After the final submissions, bras will then be prepared for display and the Exhibit & Auction on Tuesday Oct. 6. If you have your own business or your workplace allows it, your bras can be displayed there for early voting opportunities! All money donated for a vote and bra registration fees should be turned in together by Friday October 3, 2015. Bras will be displayed in the 208 Gallery through Friday Oct. 30 at noon. Voters will be asked to donate $5 per vote. No limit to the number of votes per person. All funds raised go directly to support the cancer center. If you haven't made your Artful Bra yet, there is still time. Grab your friends, your sister and have a cool girl's night creating art that will enhance the lives of those who are in the fight for their's.
