PHOENIX (AP) — Even in the spring, Los Angeles Dodgers right-han- der Aaron Harang appreci- ates a quick out. ''I'd like to thank that guy for swinging at the first pitch,'' said Harang, who allowed two runs in the Dodgers' 3-3, nine-inning tie against the Oakland Ath- letics on Wednesday. ''One pitch, fly ball to left, always makes things a lot easier.'' After getting two outs, Harang gave up a two-run double to Josh Reddick that scored Kurt Suzuki and Chris Carter. He then retired the final four batters he 12:05 p.m. 3 p.m. 3 p.m. 9 a.m. 3 3 8 6 Sports INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Sent packing by his only NFL team, one he transformed from afterthought to Super Bowl champion, Peyton Man- ning said goodbye to the Indianapo- lis Colts with a shaky voice and tear- filled eyes, then got ready to find a new place to play quarterback. At a podium alongside owner Jim Irsay, who cut the injured star Wednesday rather than pay a whop- ping $28 million bonus due this week, Manning was by turns wist- ful, nostalgic — he got choked up while praising the Colts' equipment managers — and forward-looking. The only four-time MVP in NFL history now figures to become as coveted a free agent as the league has ever seen, assuming he can assuage any lingering concerns about the series of neck operations that forced him to miss all of 2011. Giants rally to defeat Rockies SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jamie Moyer knows making the Colorado Rockies is going to be a tough task after having Tommy John surgery. At 49, he's up to the chal- lenge. Making his first appear- ance in a year and a half, Moyer pitched two scoreless innings and the Rockies tagged Tim Lincecum for five runs before the San Francisco Giants rallied for an 8-6 victory Wednesday. ''I was a little anxious entering the game,'' said Moyer. ''It's been 18 months since I pitched in game. I wasn't nervous since I entered from the bullpen in the fourth. ''I have something to prove to this team,'' he added. Moyer last pitched July 20, 2010, when he was with Philadelphia. In his two innings of work, Moyer held the Giants to a single and induced five groundouts and had a strikeout. His fastest pitch was an 82 mph fastball to Brandon Belt in the fourth inning. If Moyer makes the team, he would become the fifth pitcher to play in the majors for 25 years or more. Nolan Ryan holds the record hav- ing pitched for 27. Moyer threw just 22 pitches in his outing. ''I have a lot of work ahead of me,'' Moyer said. ''I can't sit and dwell on this because one outing isn't going to create where I'm going to be. ''Today was all about try- ing to be effective and pitch around the strike zone,'' he said. Athletics and Dodgers tie 3-3 faced. ''If you look at my track record it's pretty much the same thing,'' said Harang, who signed a two-year, $12 million contract with Los Angeles after going 14-7 and posting a career-low 3.64 ERA last year for San Diego. ''I'm not concerned about it.'' Harang has been limited slightly this spring, at least in non-pitching activities, with soreness in his right foot unrelated to the injury he had in the same foot a year ago. ''Physically I felt fine,'' Harang said. ''Sometimes you get those days where you feel really sharp in the pen and then you get out there and everything's stay- ing over the middle of the plate. But everything felt nice and easy.'' Right-hander Tyson Ross, yet another of Oak- land's young, largely unproven arms, had few such issues during his three- inning stint. Ross, who was 3-3 with a 2.75 ERA in nine games and six starts for the A's last sea- son, allowed just one hit and walked one while striking out two in his second start of the spring. ''It was good to see him respond, give us three innings and do some good things,'' A's manager Bob Melvin said. ''His velocity looked to be better.'' Perkins has been racing for two years and is a second gen- eration racer. His father Beau Perkins is a 23-year Outlaw veteran. In 13 races this season Perkins was fast qualifier 10 times, including eight races in a row. He won six heat race wins, two trophy dash wins and six main events, including a late race pass to claim the championship in the last race of the season. Perkins finished second in the championship in the sum- mer by a single point. He racked up three fast qualifiers, three heat race wins, seven trophy dashes and five main event wins, including the Danny Rose Memorial. Perkins is supported by many local businesses and fami- ly members. He would like to thank them for their help and support over the last year.
