ByMarilynAdams Ourfleshisrootedin pride. It opposes the very nature of the Lord. He humbled Himself to die for us. He has totally and un- equivocally forgiven us. His way is expressed in Ephesians 4:32 which says, "And be kind to one an- other, tenderhearted, for- giving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you." Colossians 3:13 states it another way. It says, "Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do." We forgive with the same forgive- ness that we were forgiven with. To forgive another as we have been forgiven is aligning our will with that of the Lord Jesus. Forgive- ness is a fruit of righteous- ness. There is grace to pro- cess and resolve each of- fense. To hold unforgive- ness in our heart is to resist His grace, and op- pose God and His ways. Our flesh actively re- sists the Lord. His way is through forgiveness. Without forgiveness our spiritual growth is stunted. Proverbs 13:15 Ampli- fied says, "Good under- standing wins favor, but the way of the transgres- sor is hard (like the bar- ren, dry soil or the im- passable swamp)." Liv- ing a life of disobedience brings curses. It causes us to dry up spiritually. There is no fruit in our lives to glorify the Lord. Unforgiveness permeates every aspect of our lives, destroying spirit, soul, and body. Our flesh holds back for- giveness because of pride. 1 John 1:6 says, "If we say that we have fellow- ship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth." Forgiveness is an enact- ment of this truth through humility as we are empow- ered by grace. To claim His forgiveness for our- selves, and refuse to give it to another is hypocrisy. Philippians 2:2 says, "Fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one ac- cord, of one mind." Gene- sis 11:6 gives us God's per- spective of oneness. It says, "And the Lord said, 'Indeed the people are one and they all have one lan- guage, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them." He is talk- ing about the tower of Ba- bel, but from this account we draw a significant prin- ciple. Oneness speaks of synergy. Each one supplies a part of the whole. Ephesians 4:16 says, "From whom the whole body, joined and knit to- gether by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edify- ing of itself in love." Un- forgiveness towards our- selves, or others, breaks the power of His intended oneness. Paul is talking about the Lord being our Head. Autoimmune diseases are created when the body turns against itself. The body's design of function- ing oneness is broken. Health is compromised, and our bodies begin a rapid decline or deterio- ration. Physical and sexual abuse leave emotional im- prints in our bodies. Ver- bal abuse undermines our character development. Our body doesn't forget the emotional affect of the abuse. We need to inte- grate our mind, will, emo- tions, and our body as we extend forgiveness to the ones who hurt us. Only the blood of Jesus can cleanse us from the stain of sin done against us, and re- move the imprints. Ephesians 5:2 says, "And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma." When we sacrifice our flesh and forgive, it is a sweet incense to the Lord. It pleases Him well. Philippians 1:9-11 says, "And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowl- edge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excel- lent, that you may be sin- cere and without offense till the day of Christ, be- ing filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God." Forgiveness is that excel- lent way. Jesus Christ went to the cross to pay the pen- alty of your sins through His death. Today He still offers you forgiveness. All you have to do is believe. Romans 10:9-10 says, "That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Je- sus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confes- sion is made unto salva- tion." MarilynAdamsaccepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in 1958. A debilitating accident in 1977 radically changed her life. Through that crucible of affliction, the Lord wooed her into intimacy, teaching her timeless truths that sustain her, and permeate her teachings. GOD TALK Choosing the path of excellence By Jocelyn Noveck The Associated Press NEW YORK "WE SELL POPE DOLLS," blared a sign held up by a 7-Eleven worker on 42nd Street in Manhat- tan, directing customers to a store down the block. There, on an outdoor stand, were six plushy, squeezable popes, nestled rather incon- gruously among individu- ally wrapped croissants and chocolate chip muffins. Employees stressed that the popes — $19.99 plus tax, and over 100 sold so far — were not edible. The Phantom of Broad- way souvenir store a few blocks away offered pope umbrellas, white or black, for $29.99. A few doors down at City Souvenirs, T- shirts advertised "I (Heart) Pope Francis" for $24.99. There were magnets of sev- eral varieties, and perhaps the ultimate papal souve- nir: a Pope Francis bobble- head, made by Royal Bob- bles, and selling for $59.99. "I ordered 24, and have sold all but five," said Samir Sabir, the store's manager. "People are really interested in all the pope items. I'm or- dering more." Whether to adorn your fridge, make a sartorial statement or pro- tect yourself from the rain, there's certainly plenty of merchandise — in stores and on the street, from li- censed and unlicensed ven- dors — to help mark and re- member Pope Francis' his- toric U.S. visit. In Washington, where the pontiff made his first U.S. stop, Victor Wondu was selling pins and flags ear- lier this week at the Apos- tolic Nunciature, where the pope was staying. Some pins said, "I (Heart) Pope Francis"; others said "I was there! Pope Francis USA" (the top seller). Wondu, a freelance artist from Dis- trict Heights, Maryland, said the pins were designed by a friend, for $5 each or three for $10. Flags were $10 each. In Philadelphia, the last stop on the pope's U.S. trip, Melissa and Rodney Cam- eron of Gardendale, Ala- bama, weren't taking any chances they'd be unpre- pared, souvenir-wise, when the pope arrived Saturday. The couple, both bank employees who were in town with their 8-year-old son, Connor, for the Vati- can-sponsored World Meet- ing of Families that the pope is attending, had just dropped $110 for a bag full of souvenirs, including two Pope Francis coffee mugs ($20 apiece), two T-shirts, and a sweatshirt. And it wasn't even their first round of purchases. They had already picked up a book and a shirt for their priest, and five rosa- ries with the profile of Pope Francis. "We want to take back to our relatives and share with family who are not Catho- lic. It's a way to evangelize," Rodney Cameron said. He added that he was having a hard time not buying even more. "I would probably spend more, but she stops me," he said, nodding to his wife. Mary Fitzgibbon and her husband, Michael, from Tralee in County Kerry, Ire- land, plunked down over $200 for souvenirs Thurs- day for their big family (they have five children). Among their purchases were several small saint dolls. For one child they bought a T-shirt that read: "I am the generation that will abolish abortion." Mi- chael, who home-schools the children back in Ire- land, said he realized these purchases were just small ones. "We'll get something with more intrinsic value at the end of the trip," he said. Mary, a nursing teacher, was still looking to buy a Pope Francis bobblehead. But she had scored some- thing else, a gift for her hus- band. It was a sweatshirt that said, on the back: "I am in love with a married woman! (My wife)." Vendor Jason Thomas, 25, made his way through the crowd on New York's Fifth Avenue on Thursday with a stockpile of pope merchandise mounted on a hand-held cardboard pal- ette. He quickly lightened his load as he sold off lan- yards and Vatican flags for $10 each, with a "Welcome to America" pin featuring the pope's face thrown in for free. Thomas is from St. Louis but travels the country selling merchan- dise at big events — foot- ball games, political rallies — full time. All told, he said, he could bring in $10,000 during the papal visit. "I'm an entrepreneur in America," Thomas said. "I can send you a receipt and everything." PAPAL VISIT Bobblehead or magnet? Pope souvenirs abound JOCELYNNOVECK—THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Pope Francis dolls are offered for sale at a souvenir store in the Times Square area of New York. Souvenirs are popping up all over the city to mark the pope's visit to New York on Sept.s 24 and 25. TehamaCountyChurchDirectory RedBluff....
