page 2 The Carnation Chronicle college was at Camp, Dresser, & McKee as an engineer 1 in Dallas. Currently, she works at Gainesville Regional Utilities as a supervising utility engineer in the water/wastewater systems department. "My career in water/wastewater design and construction probably doesn't sound too exciting to others, but I love building and operating things that help improve our community and environment," Debbie says. "I think many people take being able to turn on the tap and drink clean water for granted, and it feels good to be a part of what makes that happen." Her secret to success is to do something that you love and to take one day at a time. Debbie suggests making time for family and do the best that you can. She also encourages alumnae to keep in contact with their sisters. "Alpha Chi has always been a great network and support system for me personally, and I think it's a great network to maintain after college," she says. "I've met so many interesting alumnae from other chapters and I love checking back in at Gamma Iota also to see what is going on. Some things change–but some things never do." Debbie lives in Gainesville with her husband, Ralph, and their two children, Sadie and Dylan. In her free time, she likes to read on her Kindle and relax at the beach or pool. She keeps in close contact with a few sisters who live in town. E-mail her at ufdaugherty@yahoo.com. From Small Town to Big University (Continued from page 1) New Housemother Finds Warmer Weather in Florida, New Home at Gamma Iota C arolyn Ashby is no stranger to being a house director. After serving as house director at Delta Gamma at the University of Idaho, Mom Carolyn was ready for some warmer weather. Her daughter lives in Savannah, Georgia, and Carolyn wanted to be closer to her family. She started looking for larger schools around the area and landed at Alpha Chi Omega at the University of Florida. "The chapter women did the hiring themselves, and I was so impressed," Mom Carolyn says. "I had a phone interview with a few of them, and they knew exactly what they wanted in a house director." The girls offered her the position, but she was torn about making the cross-country move leaving Idaho. However, these Real. Strong. Women refused to take no for an answer. They called her a second time later in the summer and offered the position again, and this time she jumped at the chance to take on a new adventure. Now with a little more than a month under her belt, Mom Carolyn is already in the swing of things. "Every day is different," she says. "I make sure that everything is ready to go. We often have maintenance workers coming through, so I work with them, the shipments, the repairs, and check in with the girls and see how they are doing. I like to have breakfast with some of the girls and go to the meals to see how people are doing in the house. If I didn't do that, I would be out of touch with them." While the women may be teaching her a few things around the house, Mom Carolyn is introducing them to new things as well. One of her main goals is etiquette: knowing how to set a table, excuse yourself, and much more. "It is so important that they have this in their tool box," Mom Carolyn says. "It's important to know how to be comfortable at a dinner with possible employers and other people. So when the situation comes to it, they won't be nervous in a job interview or important dinner." Mom Carolyn couldn't be happier with her new home at Gamma Iota. She looks forward to getting to know the Alpha Chi traditions and events. She has three children that she likes to visit: a son in Hawaii, a daughter in Savannah, Georgia, and a daughter in central Washington. She also has two granddaughters: a 6 year old and a newborn.
