Fall 2015 PHI SIGMA KAPPA FRATERNITY AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY Phi Sig Express I am excited to bring you this first Phi Sigma Kappa Delta Triton newsletter to help provide better communication with our actives and alumni. I especially want to thank Gordon Schmitz '56 and Clark Ahrens '66 for their help and everyone else who contributed to this effort. We will continue sending our monthly e-mails. For those who are not on that list and would like to be, please e-mail Clark at ckaenterprises@gmail.com. JOIN US ON NOVEMBER 7 I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer and is ready for everything that fall brings. I hope that it brings you back to Purdue for Homecoming! We have many exciting things going on that we would love to share. It is a special time to connect with old friends and make new ones. This year's game is on November 7 against Illinois at noon. We will hold our annual alumni meeting at 9:30 a.m. before the game so that we can enjoy a nice meal at 10:45 a.m. and brotherhood while enjoying a victory over Illinois! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE The alumni board has been active and worked hard to build on the enthusiasm that was created at our 80th reunion. Vice President Dave Eichenauer '62, Secretary Clark Ahrens, Treasurer Juan Fraiz '79, Members-at-Large John Lendrum '80 and Adam Cross '14, active President Austin Tummers '15, and active Treasurer Andrew Bailey '17, along with other committee members, have helped reinvigorate Phi Sigma Kappa. Fred Hausmann '81 has been a big help to Juan with our financial records. Chris O'Donnell '89 helped get our social media on track. Dave Franzman '80 continues to be our Energizer Bunny by taking care of the current chapter house and many other things behind the scenes. We truly miss Don Kuhn '60, who entered Chapter Eternal last winter after battling cancer. Don was a great inspiration and his passion for Phi Sig continues in all of us. THE BRIGHT FUTURE OF GREEK LIFE This summer, we had a chance to meet with Brandon Cutler, assistant dean of students/director of fraternity, sorority and cooperative life. It was interesting to get his big-picture view of Greek life. Greek membership at Purdue and nationwide is at an all-time high. With this growing membership, Greek life at Purdue is strong, yet Brandon believes poor conditions of the facilities impacts the occupancy of the chapter houses. The Alumni Board is working diligently to ensure Delta Triton has a safe, secure, and up-to-date chapter house. I am proud of the active chapter's accomplishments and continued success; it even received high praise from the university! We are excited to be supporting their recruitment efforts by working with Phired Up, a Greek recruiting group that teaches them effective skills for a successful recruitment. I look forward to seeing you at Homecoming! Now, go call a couple of your pledge brothers and make a weekend of it! He has great memories with his brothers and developed long-term friendships that provided him with such a rewarding experience. Larry Faith '59 was a high school classmate of his future wife, Alice, and convinced Dick to join. He fondly remembers the brotherhood and all the events during the three and a half years he spent in the house. "It helped me develop an ability to get along with people with different personalities," he says. This experience and the chapter's numerous leadership opportunities influenced not only his undergraduate years, but also his personal and professional life. With the valuable impact Phi Sigma Kappa had in his life, Dick hopes to provide similar opportunities to future members. He encourages brothers to maintain contact with one another and with the chapter. "For me, I relive some of the old memories and have the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and to make new friends," Dick says. "If Delta Triton meant something to you at one time, it should mean "If Delta Triton meant something to you at one time, it should mean something for the rest of your life." – Dick Schleicher '59 (Continued on page 2)
