Eggert went 3-2 at the state championships in Bakersfield. Lasby would draw walks to load the bases, but the Spartans would only push across one run when Sinclair scored on a Cole Robinson sacrifice fly. The Spartans lead lasted until the third inning when starter Mitch Fox ran into trouble as Orland cleanup hitter Andrew Hutchens doubled home Gar- rett Ferreira and Clint Johns for a 2-1 Trojans lead. Red Bluff came back to tie it in the bottom of the fourth inning. This time it was Robinson leading GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Melky Cabrera showed off his offensive prowess on Tuesday. Cabrera homered from both sides of the plate in the San Francisco Giants' 8-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. 3:30 p.m. Red Bluff's Tyler Reed pitches in relief,Tuesday, against the Orland Trojans. BASEBALL 4 Red Bluf 6f Orland off the inning with a double. Fox laid down a nice sacrifice bunt to move Robinson over to third and Tyler Reed took advantage with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. Orland bounced right back in the top of the fifth inning with a 2-out rally. Hutchens tripled home Johns. Then Derek Gaddini singled in Hutchens. That chased Fox from the game and Reed took over the mound. Fox finished his four-plus innings of work with six strike outs. Orland loaded the bases, before Reed got Justin Smith to ground out to Sinclair at short. The Spartans picked up one run in their half of the inning after catching a break with their leadoff hitter. Sinclair chopped a ball down near his foot and took off for first base as the baseball scooted down the third base line. The throw to first went wild and Sinclair took second base on the over- throw. The Trojans argued the ball was foul, but to no avail and the Spartans were in business. Colin Igarta then doubled to bring home Sinclair and Red Bluff was poised for a big inning. However, the Spartans ran them- selves out of any further damage with two runners caught on the base paths during the inning. Barry Zito gave up four hits and two runs and got the win for the Giants. Ted Lilly struggled as he allowed five runs, including two homers, in two innings for Los Angeles. Cabrera led off the game with a right-handed homer Reed kept Orland off the scoreboard in the sixth inning and the Spartans got back to work in their half. Once again Red Bluff took advan- tage of a leadoff double, this time off of Reed's bat. A passed ball moved Reed to third. Taylor Figgs ripped a ball just inside the first base bag to drive home Reed with a triple and tie the game at 4-4. Sinclair completed his 3-for-4 game with his second double to score Figgs. Igarta then singled and Ramirez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lasby flew out to left field, but that brought home Sinclair for a 6-4 lead. Orland put pressure on the Spartans in the seventh when Hutchens just barely beat out an infield single. A Red Bluff error then gave the Tro- jans the tying runs on base, but Reed induced two grounders to Sinclair to end the game. Sinclair's three hits led Red Bluff. Robinson, Reed and Igarta each had a pair. Robinson made a couple of spectac- ular catches in left field for the Spar- tans, who improved to 4-2 on the sea- son. Next up for the Spartans is the annu- al Oroville tournament beginning with a game against Gridley 9 a.m., Thurs- day. Cabrera hits 2 homers in Giants' 8-4 win off Lilly that sailed over the left-field bullpen. Then, after Emmanuel Burriss doubled, Brett Pill hit a two-run homer to left. Cabrera hit another solo homer, batted left-handed, in the sixth, off the Dodgers' Ramon Troncoso. He struck out nine batters as pitcher and drove in six runs as a hitter, including a grand slam to cap a 16- 1 Red Bluff win. The Giants acquired Cabrera from the Royals to help bolster their offense. ''I don't care if it's spring training,'' Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. ''That's impressive. Few guys can or have done that. A great job on his part.'' 4 8 0 6 Sports Red Bluff wins home opener 1B Wednesday March 7, 2012 Spartans wrestle across US Special to the DN Spartan wrestlers were wrestling all over the coun- try this weekend. Present Spartan senior, Bryce Eggert went 3-2 at the CIF state championships in Bakersfield to cap off his stellar senior season. He won his first match 10-6 over Selma's Keanu Morin. Dos Osos wrestler Jonathon Solano bested Eggert 6-1 in the next round. Eggert bounced back with a 4-0 win over Aaron Pease of De La Salle and a 13-2 win over joe Else of Aptos. Finally Eggert was knocked out by Palm Springs' Andrew Tiedeman. "Bryce is a testament to the principle that if you work hard to achieve the goals you set for yourself, good things happen," Red Bluff coach Dave Rotten- berg said. After coming up short in his junior year, Eggert spent last spring wrestling greco and freestyle in the local Nor Cal events as well as two state championship events. "That investment gave him the extra edge he need- ed and he took advantage of it," Rottenberg said. "He did not just come out of nowhere and end up in the Section finals, he earned it." Former Spartan, Dillon Reid also wrestled this weekend at the NCAA western regional qualifier in Cedar Falls, Iowa. As a true freshman at South Dakota State Univer- sity, Dillon made the start- ing line-up and had a win- ning season. Although he did not qualify for the National Championships he showed he has what it take to com- pete with the big boys in Division 1 wrestling. Another former Spartan, Derek Rottenberg, a senior at Southern Oregon Univer- sity, placed sixth at the NAIA National Champi- onships held in Des Moines, Iowa. Rottenberg finished his college career as a three time All-American. His team was national runner up to the host team Grand View University.
