ByEyadMoghrabi The Associated Press HEBRON, WEST BANK A Palestinian witness on Wednesday disputed the Israeli army's account of a fatal shooting in the West Bank the previous day, an incident in which the mil- itary said a Palestinian woman was shot as she at- tempted to stab a soldier at a checkpoint. The woman, 18-year- old Hadeel al-Hashlamon, was taken to an Israeli hospital in critical condi- tion on Tuesday and her fa- ther, Salah al-Hashlamon, said she later died of her wounds. No Israeli soldiers were hurt in the incident, in the West Bank city of He- bron. The witness, Fawaz Abu Eisheh said he was at the checkpoint on his way to work at Hebron municipal- ity and heard the troops or- dering the woman to stop. "Soldiers were shout- ing at a veiled girl, while aiming their weapons at her and asking her in He- brew to step back," Abu Eisheh said, adding that he thought there might be a language barrier and of- fered to translate. He said he told the woman to walk back to- ward the exit area of the checkpoint and that she heard him and began walk- ing in that direction. "While she was walk- ing there, one of the sol- diers stopped her and shot toward the floor, the girl stopped like a needle, she didn't move," he said. Sev- eral other soldiers then sur- rounded her, and everyone was shouting, he added. Abu Eisheh said he asked the soldiers to wait while he spoke with her. "In the middle of all this shouting, one of the sol- diers shot directly at her left leg, she fell down and didn't move," Abu Eisheh said. "After 10 to 15 seconds later, he shot another bul- let at her right leg; after 10 seconds, he shot four, five bullets at her abdomen and chest area; and then after five, 10 seconds he shot an- other bullet from one meter away," he said. Abu Eisheh spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday, after the wom- an's funeral. The Israeli military's ac- count said "the perpetra- tor approached the check- point and the metal detec- tor was activated, alerting the troops' suspicion." "Forces called for her to halt, which she ignored, and she continued mov- ing while also pulling out a knife," it said. The woman's father, Salah al-Hashlamon, said his "daughter was killed in cold blood" and that he challenges the military to prove there was a stabbing attempt and show footage from checkpoint cameras. He claimed that when a soldier asked Hadeel "to re- move her veil, she declined saying, 'Bring me a female soldier!'" "Then he shouted at her, saying, 'Do you have a knife?'" he added. Hadeel got confused, the father claimed, and asshe "stepped back, he (the soldier) opened fire and killed her." WEST BANK By Brahima Ouedraogo and Carley Petesch The Associated Press OUAGADOUGOU, BURKINA FASO Burkina Faso's in- terim president trium- phantly returned to power Wednesday, a week after his political demise had seemed all but certain fol- lowing a military coup. In the days after the coup, the population showed it was prepared to take to the streets, simi- lar action that forced the country's previous presi- dent to step down a year ago after nearly 30 years in power. This time peo- ple took to the streets of the capital, Ouagadougou, to protest against the elite presidential guard, which had seized power from the transitional government. The national army also weighed in against the junta, dramatically mass- ing its troops in the capital and threatening to forcibly disarm the coup plotters if necessary, underscoring a determination here to break with West Africa's history of frequent and de- stabilizing power grabs. "In my opinion the he- roes of Burkina Faso are the republican army who came to protect the pro- testers while putting pres- sure on the junta," said Philippe Hugon, Africa an- alyst for the French Insti- tute for International and Strategic Affairs. Last week's coup was led bymembersofthepresiden- tial guard still loyal to ex- President Blaise Compaore, who was ousted in an upris- ing in October 2014 after he angered people by attempt- ing to prolong his 27-year rule. Coup leader Gen. Gil- bert Diendere was unhappy thatthetransitionalgovern- menthadbarredsupporters ofCompaoreandhisformer ruling party from running for office in elections set for October. But the military didn't back the coup by the pres- idential guards, long seen to have more privilege. The military stood closer to the general population, said Maggie Dwyer, a research fellow at the University of Edinburgh's Center for Af- rican Studies. "The response by the population — especially given the history of the presidential guard and their abuses and that they were alleged to have killed numerous protest- ers in 2014 — that's where I would say this is excep- tional," she said. "Burkina Faso has al- ways had a strong civil soci- etycomparedtoothercoun- tries in the region," Dwyer said, adding that the coun- try has seen mass demon- strations since the 1960s. Regional leaders fol- lowed suit. The Economic Community of West Afri- can States quickly passed a resolution calling for the coup leader to step down and for the transi- tional president to be rein- stated. The quick regional response shows a determi- nation by the regional lead- ers to keep West Africa sta- ble, said Dwyer. Faced with opposition from the rank and file mil- itary, popular unrest in the capital and firm oppo- sition from regional lead- ers, coup leader Diendere said Tuesday that he would step down as requested by the regional bloc. Several West Afri- can heads of state flew to Burkina Faso Wednesday to oversee the ceremony to reinstate the transitional government. By Mike Corder and Lorne Cook The Associated Press BRUSSELS The migrant crisis overwhelming the European Union tugged at the very fabric of the 28-na- tion bloc Wednesday with bitter divisions casting a shadow over an emergency summit aimed at staunch- ing the flow of asylum- seekers. Proposals included de- ploying more personnel to patrol EU borders, donat- ing at least $1.1 billion (1 billion euros) to interna- tional aid agencies to help refugees in camps near conflict zones like Syria and boosting support to Lebanon, Turkey and Jor- dan to help them cope with the millions fleeing the fighting in Syria. European Union Pres- ident Donald Tusk urged divided EU nations to set aside their differences and work together. French President Fran- cois Hollande was more blunt. "Those who don't share our values, those who don't even want to respect those principles, need to start asking themselves ques- tions about their place in the European Union," he said on his way into the meeting. Many of the migrants are arriving via risky boat crossings from Turkey to the Greek islands. 28-NATION BLOC Emergency summit on migrants held Advertisement IfthiswasyourService Directory ad customers would be reading it right now!!
