2A Daily News – Tuesday, March 6, 2012 Community people&events Birth — Mendonsa Storm the island, burn the boats Often times we think that having a back up plan is an important safe- ty net for success. If plan A doesn't work out, there is always plan B, C, D, etc.. This can be a great idea, but it can also hinder you from taking some of the biggest steps in life. Often times if you have nothing left to lose you find yourself in the best position to accomplish big dreams and goals. As long as you have the mortgage, the family or the sense of responsibility looming over you, you fear taking some of the biggest steps in your life. Per- haps you will dip your toe in the water, but you probably won't dive in head first and see what happens. A couple of years ago my life changed dramatically. I was caught up in changes that seemed over- whelming. I was at a stage in life where I had begun dreaming about following my passion for writing and speaking full time, but my life circumstances scared me to the point of stopping all of my dreams. Even though I didn't take a leap of faith and dive head first into my dreams, I did spend a significant amount of time soul searching, preparing and learning all I could about my goals. At some point, the urge to have the dream became more forceful than the fear of failing. At some point I decided if you are going to take over an island, you have to burn the boats. If you leave the boats, you leave yourself open to escape, quitting or running when the going gets tough. Sometimes you have to give failure no option or be willing to accept failure as a possibility and move for- ward anyway. you pursue your passion, the details work themselves out. Writing about each of you who have mattered has inspired me and fueled me to take this chance. Faydra Rector There is a saying that if you aim for the moon and fail, you will land among the stars. I know like I know like I know that if you put in the genuine effort and do all that you can to make your dreams come true, even if you fail to meet your ultimate goal there is no way that you won't gain something amazing for your efforts. Inspiration is everywhere if you look. Two of my personal inspi- rations are Dianne and Danny Rabalias at We Shoot Ya Photogra- phy. Watching them blossom and find a passion that started small and snowballed into something that brings beauty to their lives and to the lives of all of the families they have touched teaches me that when You Matter After years of wanti- ng and preparing, I am starting a radio talk show. I am taking my brand of life coaching to talk radio with a show I hope to call Every Day Matters with Certified Life Coach Faydra. My book is being published and I smell the smoke of the boats I have burned. I am scared, I am excited and I am proud. Most of all, I want you to burn a boat or two yourself. Join me, storm your island. Start that career, lose that weight, ask that person out. There is power in the taking of your dreams and making them real- ity.
