"It was obviously an honor," Tomsula said of the surprise greeting from the Hall of Famer. "He just wanted to come down and tell me I was a good kid, 'keep working, you're going to have good days and bad days."' This was one of the bad ones for Tomsula in his Pittsburgh homecoming as his San Francisco 49ers took a 43-18 beating just six days after a commanding season- opening win against Minnesota when much went right. Sure, there was plenty stacked against San Francisco (1-1): the short week, a cross-country flight and early kickoff time. Going into the annual rivalry Red Bluff had struggled against the run in its previous two games. Meanwhile, Corning's Alex Davila was racking up the rushing yards. Odds favored a blowout but, true to its name, a shootout en- sued and when the dust cleared Corning would remain Shootout champs for 2015 with a 56-49 win. "I'm emotional for the kids," Cardinal coach John Studer said after the game, his 19th Shootout. "It's a great thing for these kids to have a rivalry." The Cardinals got the scoring started with a 57-yard Davila run for a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage. After stopping the Cardinals on 4th and 2 on the next drive, the Spartans drove to the Corning 3 and Wes Clawson scored on a 4th down keeper, tieing it at 7 with 5:26 left in the first quarter. Corning scored again in the first and Davila got another with 8 minutes left in the half, bring- ing the score to 21-7. But Clawson and the Spartans weren't done. Clawson connected with Caleb Langley for a touchdown, bring- ing the Spartans back within a touchdown at 21-14 with 4:53 left in half. Davila scored twice more with another 57-yard run and a 42-yard catch and run to put the score at 35-14 with 2:14 left in the half. This would be the biggest mar- gin of the game. On the next drive the Spartans found success with a bit of trick- ery when Clawson threw to Lane Pritchard, who pitched to Conner SHOOTOUT DAVILA COMES UP BIG WITH CARDINALS WIN Spartans pull within 7 in final minute Wes Clawson breaks free for a run Friday night in a 56- 49Spartans loss to the Cardinals in the Tehama County Shootout in Corning.
