A : The show that will not die appears to have at least one life left, since A&E Network has picked it up for a fourth season, though no pre- miere date had been given for that as of this writing. CBS aired the series for one sea- son, then canceled it ... and then reversed itself, ordering it as a summer show in 2013, then giving it an additional summer run in 2014. Then, CBS canceled it again, and that was when A&E stepped in to order 13 yet-unseen episodes. Q : It's been interesting to watch Katharine McPhee build an acting ca- reer after becoming famous as an "American Idol" contestant. What was her first acting role? — Keith Phillips, Boulder, Colo. A : That would be "Lonely- girl15," a made-for—You- Tube series on which she played a character known as "Random Girl" in one epi- sode. Acting opportunities ex- panded pretty quickly for her after that, encompassing the movie "The House Bunny" and episodes of "CSI: NY" and "Community." Of course, after her two seasons on "Smash," McPhee now can claim a hit show with CBS' "Scorpion," which is starting its second year Monday, Sept. 21. Q : Why are some shows that were shown earlier the same week repeated on the weekend? — Mary Scott, via e-mail A : It serves two purposes. The one that puts a bet- ter spin on it for the networks is that, following the practice of many cable channels, it gives viewers another chance to catch shows they might have missed the first time. That's an especially big deal at this time of year, since networks want an au- dience for their new shows right from the first episode ... and repeating that shortly after the first airing offers the opportunity. The other rationale is that repeating an episode is more cost-effective for a network than airing a new one, par- ticularly on Saturdays, when viewership typically is much lower. For instance, though CBS used that night to "burn off" previously unseen epi- sodes of "The Millers" and "The McCarthys" during the summer, it's typically been the home of repeats of that network's many crime dramas ("Criminal Minds," the "NCIS" shows, etc.).
