I've heard other variations of my last name. They weren't as friendly and as positive." The 49ers chased down Teddy Bridgewater for five sacks in their Monday night win — even without Patrick Willis, Chris Bor- land, Justin Smith and Al- don Smith. "That's been the men- tality and identity we've had here for a long time, when I got here with (Jim) Harbaugh, and that was kind of set with Justin and Pat and those guys that have left us," Wilhoite said. "But I think we kept it here. We'd like to think that we're one of the best teams at playing that style of football and that's lin- ing up man to man and just playing physical and hitting people. We showed we can play that kind of football." Vikings coach Mike Zim- mer credited San Francisco for being far more physi- cal in the 20-3 victory, and that meant a lot to first- year coach Jim Tomsula — who actually interviewed with Minnesota when it hired Zimmer last year. Tomsula was promoted from defensive line coach to replace Harbaugh. "I speak for the guys, that's a compliment to them. In terms of an iden- tity, I just want us to be who we are, and our locker room is, what I believe, a tough-minded, physically tough and mentally tough group of guys," Tomsula said. "It's a test of wills." For the 49ers, that test of wills began months ago when Willis retired, then Borland after his stand- out rookie year, followed by veteran Justin Smith. Aldon Smith was released Aug. 7 following another le- gal run-in and signed last week with the Oakland Raiders. Mangini's scheme was a lot to master, too. "He gives us a ton of in- formation and it was diffi- cult at first," Wilhoite said. "We're professional ath- letes. If you challenge us we're going to try to rise to it. That's why we're here and that's why we're in the position being 1-0 and play- ing really well on defense, because we embraced the challenge that he placed in front of us in learning so much information. We at- tacked it head-on." Now, NaVorro Bowman is back after he missed all of last season recover- ing from left knee surgery from an injury sustained in the NFC championship game at Seattle in January 2014. "You could tell he was in his element, he was in a zone, he was where he's supposed to be," Wilhoite said. "He shined." Bowman, who played all but one snap when he needed a break after a hit to the groin, and safety Antoine Bethea each had seven tackles and a sack Monday. Five players re- corded sacks in all. "Just as many people as we lost we gained as many people," said cornerback Kenneth Acker, who made his NFL debut Monday af- ter missing his rookie sea- son of 2014 with a stress fracture in his left foot. "We're just trying to get on the same level." So, pressure's on for "Mangenius" to keep it rolling — even if he doesn't like any added attention. As Tomsula notes, "I don't think Eric really likes that nickname, to be honest with you." "That's my name for him," Wilhoite said. "We'll let it build. It's only been one week, we've got 16 more. So after that we'll see where it goes from there." 49ers FROM PAGE 1 were title contenders. Team Penske drivers Joey Logano and Brad Ke- selowski will start second and third, followed by Mar- tin Truex Jr. Ryan Newman will start sixth, Kyle Busch seventh and Kurt Busch will go off in ninth. Kurt Busch actually moved up one spot on the starting grid because Ryan Blaney, who was ninth fast- est in practice, did not make the race when the rain washed out qualify- ing. It's the third time this season Blaney has been sent home because quali- fying was canceled. "What the real bummer is, is for Ryan Blaney," Lo- gano said. "That is a big heartbreaker for him. For the rest of us, I don't think it affects much. If you are locked in the race it doesn't really affect much." Logano had hoped the qualifying session would go off because he believed he had a shot at winning the pole. Keselowski was satisfied with the result, though. Winner of the opening Chase race a year ago, he came from the 25th starting position to earn the automatic berth into the second round. "We will take that and move on," Keselowski said. "Track position is impor- tant here, but last year we were able to pass people and get up to the front. I feel like you can get there, it is just a matter of time. "Good cars always get to the top. I feel like we have a good car though and we will start close to the front, so that is a good start." The Joe Gibbs Racing cars will hope that's the case. Although Kyle Busch will start seventh, his teammates didn't have the same success in practice. Matt Kenseth was 13th fastest, Carl Edwards was 19th and Denny Hamlin was 30th. It's a far cry from how the four JGR drivers have looked over the last 11 weeks as they cemented themselves as the favor- ites in the championship race. JGR drivers have won eight of the last 11 races, and Kenseth's win last week put him in a tie with Busch and Jimmie Johnson for the top seed. But they'll have their hands full on Sunday, par- ticularly Hamlin, who will start far back from the rest of the Chase drivers. NASCAR FROM PAGE 1 that has, at least histori- cally, been highly proficient with Flacco running it. That's hardly an envi- able position, but coach Jack Del Rio is pragmatic about it. "At the end of the day, you do what you can with those who are prepared to do it," the coach said. Woodson himself gave no new clues to his Sun- day status other than the fact that he worked with the team in its Friday walk- through. He was not avail- able to the media, and Del Rio wasn't forthcoming as to whether the 17-year vet- eran might be able to play in certain situations even if he doesn't start. "We'llseehowitgoes,"Del Rio said. "He's been fighting his way back all week, and he's trying to make it work. We'll finish that evaluation as we get closer to the game. A lot of things are possible right now." "Basically, it's a next- man-up mentality," said Hayden. "Stuff happens, so we just have to react to it. The next man up has to do his job." For their part, both As- ante and Mays feel they are up to it. Asante, who will make the calls for the secondary against the Ra- vens, did have seven tack- les against Cincinnati af- ter Allen went out. Mays, meanwhile, pointed to the experience of Asante and himself as something you can't discount. "We have some inju- ries, but we still have guys who've played in a lot of games," he said. ""So it's not like we have to play a bunch of rookies just to try and get by. We'll be all right. Mays confessed he didn't even watch the Bengals- Raiders game or any foot- ball last Sunday because he was still disconsolate about getting let go before the final preseason game by Oakland. "It's almost like I took a week off and now I'm right back at it," he said. "I'm lucky I didn't go somewhere else, have to learn another playbook and then come back here and do it. But I kind of feel like I never left. All I know is I'm here now and I'm excited about the oppor- tunity." Asante maintained he will try to replicate what Woodson brings to the Raiders because he has spent the entire sum- mer trying to soak up his knowledge. He added that he's never had a player mentor throughout his ca- reer like Woodson. "Charles is always coach- ing, and I'm always asking him questions, trying to play the game within the game — the mental game," he said. "He's been doing it so long, there are always so many tendencies and keys that he sees to get to the play faster. So I'm con- stantly asking him, 'Hey Charles, what did you see?' on a particular play." Asante said if Woodson is on the sidelines, he'll still have an impact helping the secondary guys.
