JACKDEMPSEY—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has faced the Kansas City Chiefs 14times in his career and has been victorious 13times. The two teams play tonight. ByDaveSkretta TheAssociatedPress KANSAS CITY, MO. PeytonManning sounded just as stumped in trying to describe his success against Kansas City as the Chiefs have looked when trying to slow down the Denver Bron- cos quarterback. Fourteen times, Manning has faced the Chiefs. Thirteen times, he has been victorious. "I don't know if it's really worth trying to explain," Manning said ahead of Thursday night's early-sea- son showdown between AFC West contenders. "It's in the past. Here we are, in a new season, that's kind of where I guess I'm thinking the most, playing a good team at home." Still, only three quarterbacks since 1950 — Otto Graham against the Car- dinals, John Elway versus the Patri- ots, and Roger Staubach against the Giants — have managed better win- ning percentages against another team, according to STATS. All three of them are Hall of Famers. Two of those victories by Man- ning came in the playoffs, when he was calling the signals for the India- napolis Colts. But it's not as if things have changed with Denver: Manning is 6-0 against the Chiefs the past three years. "Everybody knows he's a great player," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "They all know — the whole league knows. But you prepare for the team, and focus on that, and the battles you have within that. I want the players concentrating on that part of it." Rather than the way Manning has battered the Chiefs over the past 16 years. There was that virtuoso perfor- mance in 2004, when he threw three touchdown passes to knock the 13-3 Chiefs out of the playoffs. THESCORE By Jeff Arnold The Associated Press CHICAGO Mike Olt homered and Melky Cabrera had a two-run double as part of a six-run fourth inning to help the Chicago White Sox beat the Oakland Athletics 9-4 on Wednesday night. Chicago's scoring burst in the fourth came a night after the White Sox allowed 10 runs in the fourth inning during an 11-run loss. In this game, the White Sox hit three home runs to help Erik Johnson (2-0) to his second straight win. He gave up three runs and six hits over six innings. Chicago sent 11 hitters to the plate in the fourth to extend their lead to 9-1. The best re- maining players on the PGA Tour are north of Chicago for the third straight tournament that fea- tures an $8.25 million purse and a chance to claim the $10 million bonus for winning the FedEx Cup. The rest are in North Carolina for the second event in the Web. com Tour Finals, which offers a $1 million purse and a chance to keep their jobs. Sean O'Hair knows both worlds. Less than a year ago, O'Hair finished another fruitless sea- son and was relegated to trying to earn his full card back at the Web.com Tour Finals. He missed two straight cuts, and then came through in the third event with a tie for third that effectively locked up his job status. And now he's at the BMW Championship with Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and the rest of golf's biggest stars. "I went out there and took 99 percent of the reps," Carr said of Wednesday's practice. "The one per- cent that I didn't was just to be cautious and see how I would react. It's all fine." Carr said some swelling remains in his bruised right thumb, but not enough to pre- vent him from practicing and playing Sun- day. "It obviously isn't 100 percent, but it's pretty good," Carr said. "I'm not going to hurt our team or hurt myself further when it's only the first week and go out there and try to make it worse. We all felt it was good enough — the coaches, the training staff, the doctors — that I could go out there today." There's a chance he could be joined by Charles Woodson. The veteran safety didn't practice Wednesday, but joined the team for stretches and hasn't been ruled out for Sun- day's game despite a dislocated shoulder. Woodson is making a push with the coach- ing staff to play. "Guys can play with shoulders, depending on the severity of it," coach Jack Del Rio said. "We'll just see how the week goes and whether or not he's ready to go on Sunday." Carr said he initially feared the worst Sunday when he felt pain in his right hand after attempting to stiff-arm Cincinnati Ben- gals cornerback Adam Jones. Derek Carr participated in practice Wednesday and says his thumb is "good enough to play." NHAT V.
