DEARREADERS Yester- day I opened my mail- box to find a letter from Jenn, ask- ing me to send her my new-and- improved recipe for home- made laun- dry deter- gent. She'd clipped it from her newspaper, but now she couldn't find it. Chuck asked me to send him the coupon code to get 10 percent off Nok-Out odor eliminator. Beverly, who is bat- tling ants in her kitchen, is kicking herself around the block that she didn't save the column on non- toxic ways to get rid of household pests —could I please send it to her posthaste? Every day I get requests like these. And guess what? I don't give these people the answers they're looking for. Instead, I di- rect them to my archive, where all of the informa- tion they need is avail- able to them at their fin- gertips when they input a keyword or phrase us- ing my easy-to-use search function. My website, Everyday- Cheapskate.com, is the re- pository for the stuff I write. It's free, too. You don't even have to regis- ter to make full use of it. But you can give me your email address there if you would like to hear from me. From time to time I send out bonuses, updated information and follow- ups to folks who have sub- scribed. I told Beverly to search "pests" or "ants." Chuck found that code in seconds when he searched "Nok- Out." Jenn was mixing up a batch of laundry deter- gent within minutes of searching "laundry deter- gent." And me? I felt proud as anything knowing that in- stead of just giving each of these inquirers a fish, I taught them "how to fish" so they could find the an- swers to questions they have now and other ques- tions they may have in the future. DEAR MARY I have three indoor cats and I love them to death. I bathe them when needed and I open my windows for fresh air daily. Still, there is definitely a lingering pet odor in the house that I just can't get rid of com- pletely. It's a constant bat- tle. I've tried candles, but that doesn't really work. Fragrances only exacer- bate the situation for my wife, who also has aller- gies. Because of this, I've been looking into air puri- fiers. Do you have a recom- mendation for the best one that will last a long time but not cost a fortune? —Asher DEAR ASHER My staffer Max, who works here at DPL Central, has a sim- ilar situation. Over the years, he and I have re- searched to learn every- thing there is to know about indoor cats, their particular odors and the allergies some folks have to pet odors and dander. Good news! You don't have to get rid of the cats. You, your wife and your pets can live in harmony by eliminat- ing the odor (not cover- ing it up) and purifying the air. First and foremost, you need to clean those lit- ter trays regularly with a non-toxic odor elimina- tor like Nok-Out. It's the only product we've ever tested that does what it promises without affect- ing the pets or their own- ers in any adverse way. Nok-Out kills bacteria on contact. As for what's in the air (pet hair, dander, odors, dust, microbes), Max and I highly recommend the Winix Air Cleaner (www. everydaycheapskate.com/ winix) that has HEPA fil- tration (it really does cap- ture 99.9 percent of air- borne pollutants and al- lergens, even those that are teensy tiny) and plasma wave technology, which neutralizes viruses, bacteria and chemical va- pors — without produc- ing ozone. We've been testing it for quite a long time now, and the thing is so smart, it automatically adjusts its air-cleaner settings according to the needs of your environment (read: cat activity). Wi- nix cleaner is Energy Star rated, which means it op- erates cheaply. It's good- looking, too. When I asked Max if he had anything to add, he said, "It only kicks into high whenever a cat does its business or when I cook! And you should see all the dust and pet hair it captures in its fil- ter. This little machine has completely solved our pet odor and allergy prob- lems. We couldn't be any happier!" P.S. That coupon code for Nok-Out is "DPL." Would you like to send a tip to Mary? You can email her at mary@ everydaycheapskate. com, or write to Everyday Cheapskate, 12340 Seal Beach Blvd., Ste. B-416, Seal Beach, CA 90740. EVERYDAY CHEAPSKATE How to fish and get rid of pet odors, too Mary Hunt Thankyou! PLEASE RECYCLE THIS NEWSPAPER. SHINGLETOWN Community harvest sale set Saturday The Red Bluff noon Ro- tary Club is sponsoring Harvest for Health, a 50th anniversary celebration for the Family Counseling Center, 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 at the State Theatre. The event will include wine and beer, appetizers and a silent auction. The Family Counsel- ing Center was started as the Family Service Agency by a group from the Red Bluff Rotary Club in 1965, along with community vol- unteers. Many of the vol- unteers were women who set up the Hope Chest, a thrift store to help fund the counseling center. Some of the early founders were Connie (Arrowsmith) Crowder, Doug Sale, Gene Penne, Lou Bosetti, Ra- mona Flynn and Arnold Doerr. The first day of opera- tions for the agency was July 6, 1965. There was a Family Service Agency in Redding and the direc- tor, Richard Baxter, came down a few days a week to work in Red Bluff. Bax- ter was the director of the Redding FSA for 27 years and trained under the fa- mous psychologists Mas- ters and Johnson. One of the first clients of the Family Service Agency was Sue, who still lives in Los Molinos. She saw Rich- ard Baxter in 1966 for $5 per session. Sue says the counsel- ing "changed my life." She says that in 1966, other counseling services could only be found in Chico or Redding and were not af- fordable. The Family Ser- vice Agency was "a life- saver." Many continue to testify that is still the case 50 years later and the cen- ter is now serving a record numbers of clients. The counseling cen- ter has always been very closely tied to the Hope Chest. Both agencies are non-profits with separate boards, but many long- time Tehama County resi- dents have served on both boards. In 1974, the Hope Chest purchased the ware- house and adjacent Victo- rian on Grant Street which now houses both agencies. It used to be a car dealer- ship and the family who owned it lived in the house. Red Bluff resident Carolyn Barber lived up- stairs in the house and remembers talking to her beaus from the up- per porch because they weren't allowed to come upstairs. The Hope Chest and the Family Counseling center have continued to work together to ben- efit low-income people in so many ways. Since 2000, the Hope Chest has donated more than $540,000 in operating expenses to FCC. It also provides office space free of charge, and funds special proj- ects. Over the past 50 years, the Hope Chest has contributed a total of more than $1 million to the counseling cen- ter. Harvest for Health tick- ets are $25, or two for $40, and can be purchased at the Family Counseling Center, Enjoy the Store, Cornerstone Community Bank, online at fccred- bluff.com or from one of the FCC board members, which include Joseph Har- rop, Jennifer Jones, Chris Growney, Vicki Stroud, Ann Houghtby, Jason Bauer, Rod Green, Alethia Rix and Mildred John- stone. ANNIVERSARY Rotary helps center mark 50 years The Shasta Regional Community Foundation announced the Andy Peek Livestock Scholarship is open for application with a Nov. 18 deadline. This fund was estab- lished by the Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale in honor and memory of Andy Peek, general man- ager of Shasta Livestock Auction Yard in Cotton- wood, and a family-owned business where he worked for more than four decades. Peek was former president of Western Video Market, a past president of the Cali- fornia Livestock Marketing Association and served as a board member for the Na- tional Livestock Marketing Association. A past chairman of the Shasta District Fair Board in California, in 2007 he was named Te- hama County Cattle- man of the Year and had a major presence in the U.S. livestock in- dustry until his passing. To continue Peek's sup- port of youth programs, this scholarship is offered annually to students ma- joring in Agricultural Studies, with a special emphasis in the livestock industry, who share a de- sire to work in the indus- try he dearly loved.
