ByLuisAndresHenao and Eva Vergara The Associated Press SANTIAGO, CHILE A pow- erful magnitude-8.3 earth- quake hit off Chile's north- ern coast Wednesday night, causing buildings to sway in the capital of Santiago and prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for the Andean nation's en- tire coast. Officials reported one death in a town north of the capital and heavy waves and some flooding in a handful of coastal cities. The tremor was so strong that people on the other side of the continent, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, reported feeling it. Four aftershocks above magnitude-6 and other strong shakes rattled the region after the first ma- jor tremor since a powerful quake and tsunami killed hundredsin2010andleveled partofthecityofConcepcion in south-central Chile. Jorge Medina, a Santi- ago resident, said he was in an aerobics class when the quake hit. "People started scream- ing that everything was shaking," he said. Officials ordered people to evacuate low-lying ar- eas along the 2,400 miles (3,900 kilometers) of Chile's Pacific shore, from Puerto Aysen in the south to Arica in the north. Fishing boats headed out to sea and cars streamed inland carrying people to higher ground. Santiago's main airport was evacuated as a precaution. Authorities said some adobe houses collapsed in the inland city of Illapel, about 175 miles (280 kilome- ters) north of Santiago. Illa- pel is about 34 miles (55 ki- lometers) east of the quake's epicenter. Illapel's mayor, Denis Cor- tes, told a local television station that a woman had been killed in the city but declined to give any details. Electricity was knocked out, leaving the city in dark- ness. "We are very scared. Our city panicked," Cortes said. The U.S. Geological Sur- vey initially reported the quake at a preliminary mag- nitude of 7.9 but quickly re- vised the reading upward to 8.3. Chilean authorities put the magnitude at 8.4. U.S. officials said the quake struck just offshore in the Pacific at 7:54 p.m. (6:54 p.m. EDT, 1154 GMT) and wascenteredabout141miles (228kilometers)north-north- west of Santiago. It said the quake was 7.4 miles (12 kilo- meters) below the surface. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami watch for Hawaii, saying that if the quake did generate a strong tsunami thesurgewouldarriveabout 3 a.m. local time Thursday. A magnitude-8.8 quake and ensuing tsunami in south-central Chile in 2010 killed more than 500 peo- ple, destroyed 220,000 homes, and washed away docks, riverfronts and sea- side resorts. That quake re- leased so much energy, it actually it shortened the Earth's day by a fraction of a second by changing the planet's rotation. The quake had huge ram- ifications, both political and practical, prompting the Andean nation to improve its alert systems for both quakes and tsunamis. Chile is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries because just off the coast, the Nazca tec- tonic plate plunges beneath the South American plate, pushing the towering An- des cordillera to ever-higher altitudes. The strongest earth- quake ever recorded on Earth happened in Chile — a magnitude-9.5 tremor in 1960 that killed more than 5,000 people. Associated Press writers Eva Vergara and Patricia Luna in Santiago contrib- uted to this report.
