a school-record 3,973 last season with 35 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He's been good this year, too, ranking 15th nation- ally with 630 yards and six touchdowns. He entered the season with 19 school records and heads into Sat- urday's game against Texas needing 16 yards to break Troy Taylor's career record. CODY KESSLER, SOUTH- ERN CALIFORNIA Kessler could stake a claim in the best-of-conference argu- ment. The senior threw more touchdowns — 39 last season — than any re- turning Pac-12 starter. He had five interceptions and threw for more than 3,800 yards. Kessler has thrown for 650 yards over the first two games, including a ca- reer-high 410 in a rout over Idaho, and seven touch- downs. ANU SOLOMON, ARIZONA Last year, he won a four- way battle to be Arizona's starter in his freshman sea- son and didn't disappoint, throwing for over 3,700 yards and 28 touchdowns while leading the Wildcats to the Fiesta Bowl. With a firmer grasp of the offense and more confidence, Sol- omon is expected to im- prove this season. He's thrown for 493 yards and six touchdowns so far. JOSH ROSEN, UCLA As de- buts go, it doesn't get much better than this true fresh- man's first career start. Rosen was 28 of 35 for 351 yards and three touch- downs with no intercep- tions against Virginia. He wasn't quite as sharp last week against UNLV, hit- ting 22 of 42 for 223 yards and an interception, but the future appears to be bright for this one. LUKE FALK, WASHINGTON STATE Mike Leach's Air Raid offense is designed to put up big passing num- bers, and Falk has done just that. He started the last three games in 2014, and this year, he leads the Pac-12 with 767 yards and six touchdowns. He was stellar against Rut- gers on Saturday, throw- ing for 468 yards and four touchdowns, including an 8-yard score with 13 sec- onds left to cap a game- winning 90-yard drive. He was last week's Pac- 12 offensive player of the week. VERNON ADAMS JR., ORE- GON The Ducks had a big void to fill after los- ing Heisman Trophy win- ner Marcus Mariota, and Adams got the nod as the No. 12 Ducks' starter after transferring from Eastern Washington. He threw for 246 yards and two touch- downs in a win against his former school in the opener, but injured the in- dex finger on his throwing hand. The finger appeared to hamper Adams in Ore- gon's loss to No. 7 Michigan State on Saturday, but he still managed to throw for 309 yards and a late touch- down. MIKE BERCOVICI, ARIZONA STATE Bercovici spent more of his college career as a backup, first to Brock Osweiler and the past two seasons to Taylor Kelly. Bercovici lit it up in three games as ASU's starter af- ter Kelly injured his foot, throwing for an NCAA-re- cord 998 yards in his first two starts. The undisputed starter this season, Berco- vici has yet to break out as the Sun Devils played an uneven first two games, but his big arm will likely lead to big plays once Arizona State gets its fast-paced of- fense revved up. Pac-12 FROM PAGE 1 Northern California's Sil- icon Valley it was around lunchtime in Sydney, and Hayne dominated the headlines right along with Tony Abbott's final speech as ousted Prime Minister. Hayne's game was broadcast live on subscrip- tion television in Australia, while Australian media outlets there and in the Bay Area offered blog posts and updates that have quickly gained popularity as Aus- sies do their best to learn about American football. Hayne trended on Twit- ter from the moment he was listed among the 46 active players from the 53- man roster for game day and throughout the night, including that embarrass- ing fumble. Unusually windy, Hayne gave no excuses for mis- judging the ball and div- ing to try to secure it. "I hadn't seen it blow- ing like that before. That was a bit different. That's not an excuse. We've got to catch those ones," said Hayne, who quickly re- ceived a pep talk from spe- cial teams coach Thomas McGaughey Jr. "They're just saying, 'On to the next job, don't worry about it,' and I wasn't wor- rying about it," Hayne said. "I just have to move forward, obviously disap- pointed, yeah on 'Monday Night Football', what worse could have happened, you know?" Hayne wound up with four rushes for 13 yards with a 9-yard gain as his longest run, while also catching a 7-yard pass. All week, coach Jim Tomsula stayed mum on whether Hayne would play. McGaughey made a point to mention how Hayne didn't even lead the team in punt returns during an impressive pre- season. They have called him fearless and courageous for taking the chance on a new career. Last October, Hayne made the decision to chase an NFL dream. Tomsula has long ad- mired his athletic ability and gave Hayne two more chances on returns after the fumble. "He's right back out there. There's a belief and a faith there," Tomsula said Tuesday. "Play football. We have learning moments and we'll learn from those learning moments. That's it, next play. Let's go back, let's own it and move on." Hayne has another new fan in former 49ers owner and Hall of Fame finalist Edward DeBartolo Jr., who attended his first game at second-year, $1.3 billion Levi's Stadium. "I watched the preseason and he's quite an athlete," DeBartolo said. "He's going to make a difference. It's great. ... This kid, I think he's the real deal." Notes: • Bush was headed for an MRI on his injured left calf. Tomsula said Bush was walking well, but with a short week his status for Sunday's game at Pitts- burgh is unclear. • Straight-shooter Tom- sula on his approach: "I never lie on purpose." • The 49ers had eight penalties for 57 yards — far too many for Tomsula. "We have to clean that up," he said. "It's not OK." 49ers FROM PAGE 1 MLBBASEBALL Oakland Athletics at Chicago White Sox:5 p.m., CSN. Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants: 7 p.m., CSNBA. Trainer's room ATHLETICS RHP Jesse Chavez will miss the re- mainder of the season with anon-displacedribfracture on his right side. Chavez was scheduled to pitch Wednesday. INF Danny Valencia missed Tuesday's game with a stiff trapezius muscle. WHITE SOX OF Trayce Thompson (hyperextended left elbow) likely will be sidelined until Friday, but the team was relieved that the injury, which occurred in the ninth inning Mon- day when he dove for a ball, wasn't worse. "I'm re- ally lucky," Thompson said. "The replay looked pretty bad." Up next ATHLETICS RHP Cody Martin (2-4, 6.57 ERA) will beactivatedbeforeWednes- day's game to take the place of Chavez.
