Whenmyboyswerere- ally young, I had them convinced that I knew ev- erything. More than that, I could read their minds and had eyes in the back of my head, too. That didn't last for long, but I sure had fun with it while it did. And now I am having the time of my life with you, my dear readers. Your letters and tips help to keep me on top of tech- nological advances plus everyday stuff I want to know, but cannot possibly keep up with on my own. I appreciate and depend on you more than you will ever know! RADIO-FREE. We bought a new car, which came with a trial offer of SiriusXM satellite radio service. It's my wife's car and she loves the satellite radio feature; but we do not like the cost. Our cellphone service provider, T-Mobile, allows us to stream from select music services without af- fecting our data usage. These music apps have both free and subscription services available, depend- ing on whether we want to pay to eliminate the com- mercials. Voila! We can stream the music from our smart phones to the car stereo because of the features built into the car stereo (using USB, Bluetooth or a headphone output jack), and it's just like having the satellite radio for free. We can make a coast-to-coast drive without much loss of our favorite music at a sav- ings of at least $10/month. — Dave FREEDOM TO CHOOSE. I enjoyed your article on the Keurig cof- fee machine. I have some- thing to add on how to un- lock the Keurig 2.0 coffee brewer. Anyone who bought the new Keurig 2.0 cof- fee maker may have had a rude awakening when they realized the thing has lockout technology that prevents it from working with any brand of pods other than its own "K- Cups." Here's my tip: the Rog- ers Family Coffee company has developed an easily in- stalled "Freedom Clip" to unlock Keurig 2.0 so it will accept any brand of coffee pods —including Keurig's own refillable pod that won't even work in the new 2.0 version! Rogers believes that ev- ery Keurig 2.0 owner has the right to choose any op- tion of coffee pod avail- able for his or her Keurig brewer. Rogers will supply the simple device free, includ- ing directions on how to install it in the Keurig 2.0 model, when you or- der a trial-size box of Rog- ers' OneCups for $1.99, which includes shipping. These cups fit perfectly in the Keurig 2.0 when the Freedom Clip has been in- stalled. And so does the Keurig refillable pod de- signed for its earlier ver- sions of the brewing ma- chine. The clip works great! — Gary JAPANESE BEETLES TRAPPED! I am a gar- dener and do not like to use toxic insecticides. I have battled Japanese beetles in various ways. They are selective but they devour my green beans and they seem to adore a lovely flowering bush I received as a gift. They eat its leaves into skeletal outlines. They also like my Knock Out rose bush. So I purchased a Japanese beetle trap and does it ever work! You assemble two plastic pieces, a lure and a spe- cial plastic bag and hang it downwind from the plant(s). It is ingenious. Beetles collect in the bot- tom of the bag (but can't get out) and others flock around the lure before falling in. It really works. Hurray! — Ellie Wouldyouliketosend a tip to Mary? EVERYDAYCHEAPSKATE Satellite radio, Keurig, beetles In anticipation and preparation for the 5th annual LIFT Tehama, to be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Tehama District Fairground, col- lection barrels have been placed in a variety of lo- cations through out the area. Barrels are used to collect new or gently used socks, towels, back- packs and hygiene prod- ucts. New this year, eye- glasses will be collected. Frames are needed for men, women and chil- dren. Last year's LIFT Tehama provided 180 vision screenings and 80 pairs of prescription glasses to local people in need. If glasses can be collected ahead of time, they can be refurbished and more can be served this year. LIFT Tehama is an event that combines sev- eral great projects to- gether in one place on one day. Recycle the Warmth, Project Home- less Connect and Te- hama County Contin- uum of Care will again join forces to bring help and hope to those in need with a wide variety of tangible resources. LIFT Tehama is not just a place for folks to gather information or get referrals, but rather a day for people to make life changes and get con- nected to essential ser- vices that help them move forward. Barrel locations include the Daily News, Tehama County Health Services Agency, Tehama County Courthouse, St. Elizabeth Hospital and Red Bluff City Hall. "We have been advertising with the Red Bluff Daily News for many years and rely on that advertising to move our used car inventory. Many people who come in to inquire about a car have the paper in their hand, so there is no question that they are responding to our ad in the paper."
