ByMarilynAdams Solomonhadjustsuc- ceeded his father to be the next king over a mighty nation. He had a dream. In the dream God said, "Ask! What shall I give you?" Think about what you would have answered had God asked you the same question. What one thing do you need above all else? In 1 Kings 3:8-9 Sol- omon gives God his an- swer. It says, "And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great peo- ple, too numerous to be numbered or counted. Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your peo- ple, that I may discern be- tween good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?" 1 Kings 4:29 says, "And God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great under- standing, and largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore." God's gift to Solomon was an astounding gift of wisdom. Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs. There are 31 chapters. We can read one for every day of the month to gain a greater understanding of God's amazing wisdom. Proverbs 3:19 says, "The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understand- ing He established the heavens." Here is another verse from Proverbs. Prov- erbs 9:10 says, "The fear of the Lord is the begin- ning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." How well do you know God? John 17:3 says, "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." We are all eternal beings. Ec- clesiastes 3:11 (which was also written by Solomon) says, "He has made every- thing beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from begin- ning to end." John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begot- ten Son, that whoever be- lieves in Him should not perish but have eternal life." He gave His life for us. He died on the cross to pay the full penalty of ev- eryone's sins through the shedding of His precious blood. There is only one way you can have this astound- ing gift of eternal life, and that is through believing that He died for you per- sonally. Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Je- sus our Lord." Every one of your sins will be forgiven you the minute your be- lieve this truth for your- self. There is another part to this astounding gift of salvation. Ephesians 2:7 says, "That in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness to- ward us in Christ Je- sus." That means that Je- sus died for you on pur- pose, with the intent that throughout eternity He would have the opportu- nity to reveal the fulness of His kindness to you. Oh, that you would wisely choose to accept Him to- day as your personal Sav- ior. How can you reject such an astounding gift? MarilynAdamsaccepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in 1958. A debilitating accident in 1977 radically changed her life. Through that crucible of affliction, the Lord wooed her into intimacy, teaching her timeless truths that sustain her, and permeate her teachings. Her blog can be found at www. msmorningmanna. worpress.com. GOD TALK An astounding gi of wisdom A revival is scheduled at Neighborhood Full Gos- pel Church of Corning with Evangelist Rod Vincent, the "ragin' Cajun," who will be preaching at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, and 7 p.m. Mon- day through Wednesday, Sept. 21-23. Vincent has been a evan- gelist for 38 years, minister- ing in 40 states and several foreign countries. He has been on numer- ous TV and radio programs preaching more than 1,300 revivals, camp meetings and youth rallies. The church is at First and South streets in Corn- ing. FULL GOSPEL Revival to feature 'ragin' Cajun' RodVincent By Nicole Winfield Associated Press ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE At 35,000 feet, you see a different side of Pope Fran- cis. It's not just the prox- imity of traveling on the papal plane or tucking into the same creamy la- sagna and beef filet that is clearly a papal favor- ite on the Alitalia charter that ferries him around the globe. It's seeing Francis re- laxed, surrounded by a handful of his closest aides, embarking on a new ad- venture or returning home from one, exhausted. For starters, he has an almost sinister sense of humor. When a Span- ish colleague asked the 78-year-old pope after a particularly grueling three-nation trip how he managed to have enough energy to get through the day, Francis chuckled: "He meant to ask, 'What drug is he on?'" He can be candid to a fault. When a German journalist asked why, in all his talk about the rich and the poor, he had ne- glected to ever mention the tax-paying middle class, Francis thanked him for the "correction," said it was a "mistake" on his part, and promised to address it after thinking it through. Francis also has a bit of street thug in him — rem- nants perhaps of an immi- grant upbringing in work- ing-class Buenos Aires and ministry later in life in its slums. Asked once by a French journalist about the at- tack by Islamic extremists on France's Charlie Hebdo satirical newspaper, Fran- cis threw a pretend punch at a Vatican official and ex- plained that if someone in- sults his mother — or his faith — he can expect to get socked in return. I discovered an alto- gether different side of Francis when I met him for the first time during his first foreign trip. I had rehearsed in my head the brief words I wanted to say when Fran- cis greeted each of the 75 or so journalists who were traveling with him to Rio de Janeiro for the Catholic Church's 2013 World Youth Day. Like the rest of the world, I had witnessed how in a few short months, Francis had turned the papacy upside down and electrified crowds in a way his grandfatherly but stiff predecessor, Emer- itus Pope Benedict XVI, had never managed to do in eight years. What I wanted to tell him was that as a mother, I particularly enjoyed watching him interact with children: From the gentle kisses he readily bestowed on the heads of newborns to the play- ful way he'd muss the hair of teens who got within arms' reach. And so when it came time to introduce myself, I shook his hand and started recit- ing what I had rehearsed: That I was a mother of three young children and ... He immediately cut me off. "What are their names?" he asked. Flustered, I thanked him for asking and recited the names and ages of each of the children. "Ahh," he said, satis- fied. "I always like to ask a mother about her chil- dren because she always smiles." And so I learned, in that very first encounter, that Francis also has something of a charmer in him, an easy way of engaging a com- plete stranger that was sur- prising, and yet completely normal. Francis would go on later in his pontificate to insist on a more "normal" notion of the papacy. One that re- fused to greet the cardi- nals who had just elected him pope from the heights of a podium, but rather at their level. One that resided not in the isolated Apostolic Palace but in the commu- nal Vatican hotel where visiting priests stay. And one that was ultimately far more comfortable in the shanty towns where Jorge Mario Bergoglio perfected the church's "preferential option for the poor" than the halls of power where Francis went through the motions that protocol demanded of such an improbable head of state. "We have to be normal!" Francis pleaded, when an Italian colleague asked him what on Earth he was carrying in the black leather satchel that he brought aboard the plane to Rio, given that popes past never carried any- thing — much less lug- gage. ("It's not the key to the atomic bomb!" Fran- cis quipped. Rather, it contained his breviary prayer book, his agenda, a book on St. Therese of Lisieux — and a very nor- mal razor.) The Rio trip ended with what has become the high point of every papal pil- grimage: the airborne press conference en route home. Shortly after takeoff and before dinner was served, Francis came to the back of the plane and held forth for a good 90 minutes — through turbulence — an- swering every question that came his way.
