California Energy Commission staff told the Proposition 39 Citi- zens Oversight Board that 43 ed- ucation districts out of more than 1,600 that applied for planning money have finished projects so far. To date, the commission says 536 applications have been ap- proved. Corning Police logs show a man came to the department's lobby on Third Street with his girlfriend asking for medical attention after they were involved in a collision and an altercation with a woman that was known to them. Robert Burkhart, 26, and Victo- ria Bacquet, 23, reported that Bri- anna Lynn Ward had used her ve- hicle to force their vehicle off the road, after which Ward attacked Bacquet with some type of cutting instrument, Corning Police Chief Don Atkins said in a press release. Bacquet was taken to the hos- pital where she was treated for minor to major injuries, includ- ing stab wounds to her arms CRIME Co rn in g woman ar re st ed i n stabbing By Heather Hoelscher hhoelscher@redbluffdailynews.com DN_Heather on Twitter RED BLUFF New things are hap- pening in the Red Bluff Union El- ementary School District in the new school year that will accom- modate fast-growing enrollment and new technologies. Makerspace, a space designed for students to explore ideas and be creative, is now at Vista Prepa- ratory Academy. The district col- laborated with Tehama County Department of Education on its makerspace and the district has just finished building one of its own for Vista. "That's exciting. The kids are really jazzed. They sent me over something that was 3-D printed," said Superintendent William Mc- Coy. "We have been working for the last three years to reestablish Vista Prep as a center for learn- ing and cutting edge technology." The district has worked with Michelle Carlson, of Future De- velopment Group, to establish the makerspace at Vista. Video production and podcast- ing are some of the new programs offered through makerspace for the sixth grade level. The seventh- graders will be able to learn more about programming and robot- ics. Vista eighth-graders will be learning multimedia design. "They will be working on inte- grating the previous things they have learned into multimedia de- sign," McCoy said. Enrollment is up this year by quite a bit, McCoy said. "It seems like there are a lot of new families coming to the area, which is great," McCoy said. "They're not necessarily coming from other schools but they're coming from other states, which is surprising and good news. That means that our classes are really full." There were some challenges with increased enrollment, but they have all been rectified, Mc- Coy said. The district will be up 30 to 50 students over what was expected. To help with the enrollment growth, the district has added a new position, registrar to enroll students year round. The ceremony was started by Greg Latourell and his wife Vickie on the sixth anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks that brought down the twin towers at the World Trade Center, hit the pentagon and hijacked Flight 93, that crash landed in Pennsylva- nia, after the fifth year passed with no ceremony. A few years ago, the Tehama County Young Marines took over and this year the Marine Corps League, which accepted a proc- lamation at the Tehama County Board of Supervisors meeting on Sept. 1, will be running the cer- emony. "We'd like to encourage the citizens of Tehama County to at- tend," said Marine Corps League Sr. Vice Commandant Ray Valen- zuela, Sr., when accepting the proclamation. "We'd like to en- sure that the essence of that day is never forgotten. This is not a military event, but an event to honor those who gave their all on Sept. 11." The event is particularly meaningful to Valenzuela, as he is a retire Cal Fire captain, he said. "I'm honored to take the lead roll in this event," Valnzuela said. "Thank you to the board. It is a day that will never be for- gotten." SEPT. 11 COMMEMORATION SET FRIDAY AT COURTHOUSE Above:TheRedBluffPoliceHonorGuardperformsagunsaluteat the 2014Sept. 11ceremony.
