The Red Bluff senior struck out nine in four innings of work and capped off his day by belting a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning as the Spartans got a mercy-rule win over their hosts. Lasby opened up the scoring in the first inning when he drove in Colin Igarta, who walked four times and scored all four of those times during the game. Lasby then took the bump and proceeded to strike out the side. He opened up the bottom of the second inning by walking the first two Eagles hitters he faced, before finding his groove again and retir- ing the next three batters he faced. Igarta opened the third inning with yet another walk and the Spartans offense got back to work. Tyler Reed reached on an infield single and then Lasby drove in Igarta with a fielder's West Valley Daily News photo by Rich Greene Red Bluff starting pitcher Robby Lasby deals a pitch to the plate,Tuesday, at West Valley. BASEBALL 1 choice ground ball to short. Reed would eventually come home on a wild pitch the West Valley catcher lost sight of and it was 3-0 Red Bluff. That was plenty of run support for Lasby, who struck out two more batters in the bottom of the third and induced a weak bouncer back to himself at the mound for another out. Red Bluff put up five runs in the fourth inning. This time it was Wyatt Hought- by getting a rally started with a walk. Evan Sinclair and Igarta fol- lowed that up with walks of their own to load the bases and Modesto Ramirez drove them all in with a double to the center field fence. Reed followed with a walk and two batters later Mitch Fox sin- gled in two more runs for Red Bluff. West Valley hit their only ball out of the infield against Lasby in the fourth, but were set down in order after that. Red Bluff opened up the fifth inning by once again loading the bases after Houghtby singled and Taylor Figgs and Garrett Sandow drew walks. However Red Bluff couldn't cash in as the next three Spartans struck out. Figgs came in to relieve Lasby and struck out five batters in two innings of work In the top of the sixth the Spar- tans made up for the runners they left on base in the inning prior. Red Bluff sent up 11 batters and hung eight runs on the board. Lasby opened the inning with a walk. Fox followed with his sec- ond single in as many at bats. Houghtby then hit his second sin- gle of the game to load the bases. Figgs drew an RBI walk and Sinclair followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in another run. Igarta walked to reload the bases and Ramirez followed with another walk to push across yet another run. Reed kept the bases loaded with an RBI single and that set the stage for Lasby, who smoked a ball to left field and gave the Spartans a 16-0 lead. Lasby finished with six RBIs from the plate to go along with his nine strikeouts on the mound. "It feels great. It feels amaz- ing," Lasby said of his season's start. West Valley got a pair of hits in the bottom of the inning to pro- duce their only run of the game. Red Bluff coach Joe Gallaty credited his team for hustling and competing on every pitch, but even a 16-1 win can't please a manager completely. "It's the first game of the year. We got a lot to do.," he said. The Spartans head to Chico for a tournament Friday and Saturday. They open up their home schedule on March 6 when they host Orland at 4 p.m. 7 p.m. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Danny Granger scored 25 points to help the Indiana Pacers beat the Golden State Warriors 102-78 Tuesday night for their fifth straight win. Tyler Hansbrough scored 15 points and Roy Hibbert added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Pacers, who remained in third place in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers topped 100 points for the fourth straight game after doing so just six times before the current stretch. Monta Ellis and Brandon Rush each scored 14 points for the Warriors, who fin- ished with season lows in points and field-goal per- centage (.341). Golden State guard Stephen Curry sat out with a strained tendon in his right foot. The Warriors missed the 45-percent 3- point shooter — they made just 1 of 17 3s in the first three quarters. Indiana shut down the league's No. 5 scoring offense, which had averaged 99.2 points per game. The Pacers led 52-38 at halftime as Golden State posted its second-lowest point total in a first half this season. A 3- pointer by Paul George early in the second half pushed Indiana's lead to 57-40, and a reverse layup by Granger upped the margin to 19. A free throw by George gave Indiana a 20-point lead for the first time, and a putback dunk by Hibbert on a miss by Granger forced the War- riors to call timeout. Golden State missed four of its first five shots after halftime to fall behind 62- 40. A 3-point play by Granger pushed Indiana's lead to 77-47. Granger scored 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting in the third quarter. The Pacers shot 12-for-19 as a team in the period while holding the Warriors to 7-for-21 shoot- ing. George had 11 points and nine rebounds, Darren Colli- son scored 11 points and David West had 10 points and seven boards for the Pacers. 102 78 Sports Spartans cruise in opener 1B Wednesday February 29, 2012 Indiana does in Warriors
