Ontheair Some have wondered if the weekly celebration of Gordon's career at each NASCAR stop has led to distractions. "Honestly, I've had so many distractions over the years, far more distractions than I've had this year, and performed well," Gordon said. Particularly at Darling- ton. He first won his first Southern 500 in 1995 when he was still an unproven driver on the way to his first Sprint Cup title. Gor- don thwarted the Winston Million bonus try of Dale Jarett by winning a sec- ond straight Southern 500 in 1996, then became part of history himself a year later when he collected the $1 million prize. Gordon took an unprec- edented fourth Southern 500 in a row in 1998, then tied Cale Yarborough's mark of five in 2002. In 2007, Gordon moved in front with his sixth Southern 500 win, getting through the final laps with an engine ready to burst. Gordon recalled how his radiator blew up when he took the car to victory lane, one of his most memorable Darlington moments. His sister, Kim, was on hand that day, Gordon re- called, and had not ever seen her brother win. When word reached the family of Gordon's engine problems, they left Darlington early to beat the traffic, then were stunned when he fin- ished out front in one piece. "You can imagine. My stepdad got in a lot of trou- ble that day as they were listening to it on the radio driving out of here," Gor- don said with a laugh. Defending Xfinity Se- ries champion Chase El- liott will slip into the No. 24 driver seat next season after Gordon leaves. He has followed Gordon's legacy of success at Darlington and elsewhere and hopes he can one day live up to that. "This is not the only place he's dominated at," Elliott said. "He's obviously made history at a lot of places and that separates him from a lot of the guys." Gordon said the reason he's succeeded at Darling- ton is perhaps why the suc- cess overall has subsided in recent years. Darling- ton demands patience to wait out competitors be- fore striking, he said. "These days, you are ag- gressive from the time they drop the green," Gordon said. "The cars have tons of downforce, the tires don't fall off and you just go for it. This weekend I think it's going to go back a little bit to the old school way of Darlington and I hope that suits my style and what we have as a race team." NASCAR FROM PAGE 1 TERRY RENNA — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Chase Elliott gets ready for a run during a NASCAR Sprint Cup practice session Friday at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, S.C. Elliott will take over Jeff Gordon's ride next year with Hendrick Motorsports. ond-round victory Wednes- day, when she immediately headed out to the practice courts for extra work with coach Patrick Mourato- glou. And that probably ex- plains the look of relief on Williams' face as she walked to the net to shake hands with Mattek-Sands, quite a contrast to all of the screams of "Come on!" and fist pumps during the match. Some of Williams' most vociferous reactions came down the stretch — includ- ing when her momentum carried her all the way over to Mattek-Sands' side of the net after a long sprint to reach a drop shot and, in the next game, when she hit a cross-court fore- hand passing winner and dropped down, doing the splits behind the baseline, shaking both fists. Next up for Williams is a fourth-round match Sun- day against yet another American, 19th-seeded Madison Keys. Looking down the line, Williams' quarterfinal op- ponent could be older sis- ter Venus, who reeled off the last five games to beat 12th-seeded Belinda Ben- cic of Switzerland 6-3, 6-4. Did Venus get any family advice before facing Ben- cic, who is responsible for one of Serena's two losses in 53 matches in 2015? "Yes, but that's between us," Venus said, breaking into a wide smile. "I think it worked." In men's action, No. 1 Novak Djokovic and de- fending champion Marin Cilic moved into the fourth round, while Rafael Nadal hoped to join them in the night's closing match. Two top-10 players lost — No. 7 David Ferrer and Nol 10 Milos Raonic — and No. 14 David Goffin, citing stom- ach problems, became the 13th man to retire during a match because of injury or illness. There were moments Friday under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium when it appeared that Mattek- Sands, who is ranked 101st as she comes back from two hip operations, would end Williams' 30-match Grand Slam winning streak . While Mattek-Sands won doubles titles this year at the Australian Open and French Open, this was a rare moment in the spot- light for her in singles. She had appeared in the U.S. Open 13 other times, never making it as far as the third round until this week at age 30. But by mixing in slices with flat strokes, heading to the net when there were openings — and even some- times when there weren't — Mattek-Sands played a varied, attacking game that gave Williams fits for nearly two full sets. "She went for every- thing. She played her style, her 'Bethanie Mat- tek-Sands tennis,'" said her husband, Justin Sands, who offered kudos to Wil- liams for "her fight, her determination, her will to win. You know you're going to be in a dogfight. She is never, ever out of a match." That was the case on this night, despite particular problems on break points: Williams was able to con- vert only 3 of 16 through the first two sets, before go- ing 3 of 5 in the third. "I said, 'You know what, Serena? Just keep going,'" said Williams, who also has a chance to become the first woman since Chris Evert in 1975-78 to win four U.S. Opens in a row. "'Keep trying, keep trying, keep trying.'" Tennis FROM PAGE 1 at four pitches, and aside from a foul nubber, made no contact while strik- ing out. And the Giants dropped their seventh con- secutive game, as their of- fense went flat again at car- bonated Coors Field in a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rock- ies. The Giants cannot stroll past any chance to scrape off a portion of their def- icit in the NL West. They must be frenetic, and no- body does frenetic better than Pence. But his return from an oblique strain is not around the corner, and the Giants fell to 35-48 when he isn't in the lineup. They are 34-18 when Pence starts — something that has not happened often enough because of the frac- tured forearm he sustained in the spring, the ten- don strain that later came about as a result of that in- jury and now the oblique he pulled Aug. 17. In 17 games since then, the Giants have hit just seven home runs. Byrd owns three of them. The other four? Well, you're not going to rely on Kelby Tom- linson, Nori Aoki, Madison Bumgarner or Ryan Vogel- song to go deep for you night after night. The Rockies have two players like that. Carlos Gonzalez hit his NL-best 36th home run in the first inning off Chris Heston. One pitch later, Nolan Are- nado laid waste to a fast- ball over the middle for his 35th homer. The Giants are 22-41 when they do not hit a home run. They are 47- 24 when they do. And even though the Rockies are 55-78, the Giants just have not matched up well with their power threats this season. A two-run first inning is seldom enough at Co- ors Field. This time, it was plenty. De La Rosa cruised until the sixth, when Juan Perez singled, took second base on Heston's sacrifice and scored on Angel Pagan's single. Matt Duffy followed with a line single. Brandon Belt, who is entering one of his funks again, struck out. But that left Posey with a chance to shine. Posey already had dou- bled off De La Rosa in the same at-bat in which he grimaced in pain after fouling a ball off his foot. But De La Rosa did not give Posey a chance to win an- other confrontation.
