By Cam Inman Bay Area News Group SANTACLARA Their starting offense is in place, but the San Francisco 49ers enter Thursday night's exhibi- tion finale similar to how they began the preseason, with plenty of ques- tions on a reconstructed defense. Who will start at cornerback? What to do at outside linebacker? How many defensive linemen will re- main for coach Jim Tomsula, their former position coach? At least NaVorro Bowman's recon- structed knee has triumphantly an- swered its call to duty, so much so he won't have to test it further against the San Diego Chargers at Levi's Sta- dium (7 p.m. kickoff). Bowman's comeback, after a 1 - year absence, still needs to be com- plemented by a defensive corps try- ing to unearth the next generation of stars. One such emerging prospect is cornerback Kenneth Acker, who has come on strongly to challenge for a starting spot with fellow 2014 draft picks Dontae Johnson and Keith Reaser. That job, opposite en- trenched starter Tremaine Brock, was initially bequeathed to Shareece Wright upon his free agency arrival from the Chargers. "I won't get into that conversa- tion much," Tomsula said Wednes- day about the cornerback competi- tion. "I'm not going to get into that too much. We'll find out where T- Brock is at, and I expect him to be absolutely fine." Brock tweaked a hamstring last week, and although he is expected to be ready for the Sept. 14 regular- season opener against the Minne- sota Vikings, his injury history sug- gests the 49ers must examine con- tingency plans. Of course, multiple cornerbacks are a necessity in a pass- oriented league, anyhow. Acker played through last exhibi- tion season, only to spend his rookie year on injured reserve because of a foot fracture. Sonny Gray came in with the American League's best ERA at 2.10 and was in the prime con- versation for the A.L. Cy Young Award. But he gave up hits to the first four Angels batters, and "they had four runs before you knew it." The day would only get worse.
