8A Daily News – Saturday, February 25, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith Why is prayer so hard? McClatchy Newspapers IT'S HARD TO STAY AWAKE The Rev. Holly McKissick, pastor, Peace Christian Church in Kansas City, Mo., and Overland Park, Kan.: Prayer is hard work because life is increasingly com- plicated and crowded. The Buddhist Center where my church worships on Sunday evenings is in a transitional neighborhood. There are middle-class families with sun-drenched porches and poor folks living under the bridge. The Buddhists give out backpacks to the homeless filled with toothpaste, soap and shampoo. They are called bodhi bags; bodhi is a Buddhist word that means "awake." We have joined their effort. My husband found a dozen backpacks in our cavernous basement. More than clearing out, he wants to be awake. Awake to the pres- ence of God. Awake to God's spirit in the next person he meets. That is prayer. It is not sitting still with your hands in your lap (although it can be); it is being open to the grace of God in everything and everyone. My wise friend Donna said, "Prayer happens in things that I hear, see, feel or dream. When I greet a stranger on the street and she smiles, that is prayer. When Teddy says, "Why aren't all grammas funny like you?" and my heart soars, that is prayer. When my Jim would call and say, "Hey babe, what shall I pick up for dinner," that was prayer. Prayer takes a little work. Prayer is habit, art and skill and, finally, the gift that comes from being awake. GRAND CANYONS OF THE MIND Rabbi Avi Weinstein, head of Jewish studies, Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy: For many people, the con- nection between prayer and what they perceive as "spir- ituality" is a tenuous one: "I feel spiritual when I'm in nature, especially when I see something spectacular like the Grand Canyon or Pikes Peak, and often I'll be moved to offer a prayer or a blessing at that moment, but even the grandest building does little for me." This is often accompanied with a disdain for orga- nized religion and the feeling that prayer should be a spontaneous response, but not part of a daily or weekly routine. In fact, it is the routine that is so off-putting, precisely because it is so demanding. The problem people have with prayer is that not only do they want their prayers answered affirmatively, but they want the experience of prayer to be transforming. What they fail to realize is that true inspirational prayer requires them along with their faith community to make their place of worship as inspirational as the Grand Canyon. Whether it is joining in song or engaging in silent devotion, the full engagement of the community might be a greater experience than climbing a mountain, but one has to contribute and focus because there is no mountain to do the heavy lifting. Prayer would be less difficult if people realized that they are contributors instead of consumers. Until that happens, for many, prayer will remain inaccessible. KVIP Christian Radio turns 41 On Jan. 4, KVIP radio reached lat- est of many milestones, celebrating 41 years of broadcast ministry to the greater Redding area and beyond. Driving down Hartnell Ave, east of Churn Creek Road in Redding, one would pass right by the studio, tucked behind buildings, out of view from the street; its high tower hidden in among the trees. The only visible indicator at roadside, 1139 Hartnell Ave, is a small square sign among a cluster of signs- "Christian Radio KVIP." What the radio ministry lacks in "high visibility" is more than made up for in a large "broadcast presence". There are very few areas in the remote mountain regions above Redding, where the KVIP-FM signal cannot be received. The FM signal is carried by some 30 radio translators to five states- California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon and Washington. It can also be heard through audio-streaming on the inter- net at www.kvip.org In the 1960s, KVIP-A M was a commercial radio station. The pro- gram manager at the time, spewed out daily rants against Judeo-Christian theology and values, rejected the Bible's account of creation, and regu- larly poked fun at religion - Christian- ity in particular. Royal Blue, then pastor of the Red- ding's North Valley Baptist Church (now Crosspoint Church), said the sta- tion manager's constant verbal barrage so infuriated the ladies of the Wednes- day night prayer meetings, they began to pray that KVIP radio would go off the air.In 1968, Pastor Blue was invit- ed by KVIP management to debate the theory of evolution on the air with a Shasta College professor. Instead of coming to the live debate, the profes- sor sent a tape recording. The manag- er and Pastor Blue discussed the theo- ry as presented on the recording, and compared it to the Biblical record. Within a year after the "debate", KVIP-AM radio was for sale at a price of $45,000. The $3,000 down payment needed to purchase KVIP radio was pledged at a Wednesday night prayer meeting at North Valley Baptist Sing along Church. This marked the beginning of Pacific Cascade Communications (PCC). On Jan. 4, 1970, at mid- night, Christian Radio KVIP- 540 AM first aired as an affil- iate of the Family Radio Net- work. The KVIP staff was greatly encouraged when correspondence was received from a listener in Germany, and from someone else on a ship out in the Pacific Ocean. Both individuals had heard the debut broadcast from Redding. "We knew then, that God had a special plan for KVIP radio", said Pastor Blue. "We have experienced nothing but God's blessings over the years." nications purchased KGRV-700 AM, Roseburg, Oregon, a commercial Christian radio station. Today, KGRV still features Christian pro- gramming along with commercials. Although the station is owned by PCC, it is responsible for its own funding. Jay Nelson GodTalk The radio ministry has been listen- er-supported since day one. KVIP has a constant base of financial supporters each month. Special Fall and Spring Share-A-Thons are conducted each year to raise funds for equipment upgrades, and special needs related to the ministry. A Share-A-Thon gives listeners an opportunity to make a 6-month finan- cial pledge, but also to share testi- monies of how the station's program- ming has touched their lives. The faithfulness of God, through the dedication and commitment of KVIP's listeners, speaks for itself. Over four decades, as financial needs for general operations, emergency equipment repairs, or upgrades have been made known to the core of the ministry's supporters, the needs have always been met. In October 1975, KVIP-98.1 FM was added. It was Redding's first FM frequency granted by the Federal Communication Commission. KVIP broke all association with the San Francisco-based "Family Radio Network" in the early 1980s. It joined Moody Broadcasting Network of Chicago, Ill., and began producing its own local programs. In 1985, Pacific Cascade Commu- In 2002, PCC pur- chased a second FM sta- tion, KMWR in Brook- ings, Oregon, which now simulcasts the daily pro- gramming of KVIP-FM, Redding. KVIP has many inspir- ing programs at 98.1 FM and 540 AM, aired 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To the south the FM signal reaches the Williams area, while the AM signal can be heard as far as Fairfield. KVIP radio assists ministries, churches, and civic organizations who submit information for public service announcements. I have four favorite programs on the FM station. On my morning drive to work, Monday through Friday, I enjoy the topics discussed at 5:40 AM on "Discover The Word". For the ride home, there is "In The Market with Janet Parshall," aired 2 PM-4 PM. At 9 am Saturday mornings an interesting story is presented through "Lamplighter Theatre". Saturday evening at 9 PM "The Public Square" provides a provocative two hour dis- cussion of Washington politics and issues from a conversative Christian perspective that is a valuable resource. Broadcast schedules and informa- tion for both KVIP-AM and FM broadcast can be found at http://www.kvip.org/, or by calling 530-222-4455.
