6A Daily News – Friday, February 24, 2012 Education in Tehama County KEEP ON LEARNING 100th Day Celebration The wheels on the bus... Photo courtesy of RBHS student Jade Routledge With the passage of SB 81 the first week in February, California public schools were given a reprieve on cuts of over $240 million from home-to-school transportation programs for the current school year. Courtesy photo Lincoln Street School students came together recently to celebrate their 100th day of school with fun and educational math activities. During the celebration the youngest students built a paper pizza that was used to represent a tally chart and graph, while the older ones worked together on more advanced math problems. Teacher Dana Brent enjoyed having all of the students working together, actively involved in the math activities. For more information, visit www.tehamaschools.org. Although school administrations are being told to bud- get for zero funding for these programs for the next school year, rural districts like Red Bluff Joint Union High School District and others understand the essential role that their student transportation departments play in edu- cation of our youth. Did you know the Red Bluff JUHSD Transportation Department: • Serves two districts covering 2,000 square miles? • Employs 14 certified school bus drivers? • Employs four full time mechanics and one five-hour mechanic to maintain a fleet of 20 school buses as well as maintains school buses for other area districts? • Has a registered ridership of 1,871 pupils? • Runs 49 home-to-school routes over a distance of 1,070 miles performing 716 stops each day. • Drove for 216 activity events last school year? Mercy students perform services The week of Jan. 29 through Feb. 4 Mercy High School along with Sacred Heart Elementary School celebrated Catholic School's week. The theme this year was Academics, Faith, & Service. The week began with both schools participat- ing in mass at Sacred Heart Church in Red Bluff which included Mercy's Choir and Sacred Heart School's choir performing during mass. Each school had vari- ous activities going on through the week. At Sacred Heart School the students were allowed to wear a pair of slippers to school as long as they also brought a pair to be donated later in the week to a local nurs- ing home by Mrs. Lam- may 8th grade religion class. Both schools did pre- sentations on Catholic School's Week for Red Bluff's Rotary and Red Bluff's Kiwanis. The students spoke about all the different community projects both schools are involved in throughout the year. These incredible statistics serve to give you an idea as to the impact that home-to-school transportation has on our students but it does not tell the story of the personal pride, care and professionalism displayed by each employee in the department as they plan, maintain and drive with the safety of the students always on their minds. From the greetings in the morning to the salutations in the evenings, our drivers are the first and last employees that many of our students see each day and for over 40 years the Red Bluff JUHSD Transportation Department has performed these tasks without a single at fault injuri- ous accident. Given its commitment to student achievement, it is easy to understand why the Red Bluff JUHSD supports the ongoing fiscal resources for a quality home-to-school transportation program. Corning announces kindergarten registration Courtesy photo Mercy Students cleaning off and painting over graffiti at a local business. Mercy students cele- brated the week by treat- ing their teachers to goody bags, poems, and a luncheon. On Friday each class took on a different com- munity service project. The freshman class volunteered at Villa Columba by cleaning, weeding, and doing other chores. Some students helped out Metter Elementary School, other students did clean up at the City park, and one class took on the task of cleaning graffiti off of a local busi- ness. The paint and supplies were donated by Paint Mart. Community service is a big part of both of schools, so it was very appropriate this year for Service to a part of Catholic School's week theme. The Corning Union Elementary School District will hold registration for kindergarten students enter- ing school in the 2012-2013 year from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, at the Olive View School Gym. This year all incoming Kindergarten students will be screened by the Kindergarten staff; parents are requested to bring their Kindergarten student with them to the registration. To register a child, proof of date of birth is required in the form of a live birth certificate, baptismal record, or other legal proof. Students with a birth date from Nov. 1 through Dec. 2 of 2007 may be eligible for a Transitional Kinder- garten program. These students then will attend a reg- ular Kindergarten program the following year. Parents must present the child's current, written immunization record from a physician or health department. Children must have the following immu- nizations before the first day of school: • Polio - 4 doses (three meet the requirement if last dose was given after the fourth birthday). • DPT - 5 doses (4 meet the requirement if last dose was given after the fourth birthday). • MMR - 2 doses • Hepatitis B - 3 doses • Varicella vaccine (chicken pox) - 1 dose or docu- mentation by a physician that the child has had the dis- ease. We must have physician verification of chicken pox or the child will need the vaccination. Parents will need to provide proof of residency at time of registration (utility or phone bills, rent receipts, etc.) Parents will also need to provide a current home phone number and two emergency contact phone numbers.
