ByJimmyDurkin BayAreaNewsGroup ALAMEDA Mixedopinions have followed Oakland Raiders' second-round pick Mario Edwards Jr. around for a while. Edwards was one of the top-rated recruits in the country out of high school, a five-star prospect from Texas with offers galore, but his collegiate career at Florida State offered mixed results. Edwards, a defensive end, had only eight sacks in his three years with the Seminoles, and questions about his desire, condi- tioning and passion filled his draft profile. Still, he was a first-team All-ACC pick and Sports Illustrated named him a second-team All-American. The questions cropped back up when Edwards' debut didn't go so well. Pro Football Focus rated him as the Raiders' worst defender in his 36 snaps in the team's exhibition opener against the St. Louis Rams. Attributing part of that to nerves and acclimation to the NFL, Edwards re- sponded the next time out. He split a sack with Ben Heeney that forced a fumble SaturdayagainsttheMinne- sotaVikingsandoverallwas much more active. "I think he's progressing very nicely," coach Jack Del Rio said of Edwards. "Much improved week of practice, much improved outing in the game. Definitely trend- ing the way we want to see it go. Just want to see more. Want to see continued ef- fort and energy the way he provided it last week." Edwards admits to be- ing surprised by the game speed in his NFL debut. "I felt like I got off the ball good, but by the time I took my second step, the center had already reached me," Edwards said. "That's when I was like, 'This game is a lot faster than it was in college.'" Against the Vikings, he was credited with two quar- terback hurries in addition to his half sack. Only start- ing defensive tackle Dan Williams had a higher over- all grade from Pro Football Focus and Edwards was the Raiders' highest graded pass rusher. "I just kind pinned my ears back, stopped think- ing as much and just played," Edwards said. "The first game, I was definitely thinking too much on top of being nervous. Once those jitters were gone and I real- ized how fast it was, the sec- ond game was better." Defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. said he's liked what he's seen. "I think he's done a fine job," Norton said of Ed- wards. "If you watch him in college, you watch the ef- fort, the attitude, the play- making. You can always tell good players when they're around the ball a lot, when they're making plays. The ball is tackled or sacked or intercepted and you see the same number showing up again around the ball, that's the sign of a good player and that's the sign you want to see." RAIDERS Edwards Jr. progressing defensively By Cam Inman Bay Area News Group ENGLEWOOD, COLO. The San Francisco 49ers haven't lost Ahmad Brooks, at least not yet. But one day after the outside linebacker was charged with misdemeanor sexual battery, his team- mates sounded as though they've already moved on. After Thursday's prac- tice against the host Denver Broncos, NaVarro Bowman spoke as if the 49ers have al- ready parted with Brooks, the only other defensive starter beside Bowman re- maining from the 2012 sea- son's Super Bowl run. "It's frustrating, because when you're a team, you're building chemistry for this group to fight through ad- versity," Bowman said. "That's a big loss for us." Three weeks ago, the 49ers released their pre- mier outside linebacker, Al- don Smith, after his fifth ar- rest since 2012. Bowman, along with coach Jim Tomsula, en- dorsedtheyoungplayersleft at outside linebacker: Co- rey Lemonier, Aaron Lynch and Eli Harold, who were drafted in 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively. "Now that they see we need them, they have to step up and turn it on, be- cause we do," Bowman said. "We lost two great guys and we have to find some guys to fill that void. Those are some huge shoes." Baalke, however, said he hasn't gathered enough in- formation yet to determine whether Brooks, a 10th-year veteran, ultimately will be released. "We excused him from team activities to get on top of this," Baalke said before Thursday's prac- tice. "It's also important for him to start taking care of business on his end. It's our job to stay focused here on what we need to stay fo- cused on." Brooks figured to start at right outside linebacker, where Aldon Smith played until his release. Thursday, Lemonier lined up at that spot while Lynch was on the left side with the starting unit. Har- old, who's been on the right side most of camp with the second unit, was praised by Joe Staley for his continu- ous hustle and determina- tion. Lemonier has only one sack in 19 career games. Lynch's six sacks last year as a rookie shared team- high honors with Brooks. Harold had 17.5 sacks in 36 games at Virginia. "Corey, Aaron and Eli, they're good," Bowman said. "They're young. I was young at a point in time. It's up to them what they want to do. But the opportunity is there for them." NowthatBrookshasbeen charged with a crime, stem- ming from a December in- cident at former teammate Ray McDonald's house, NFL officials take control of the fact-finding mission. "Now it's in their hands to make a decision based on the personal-conduct policy," Baalke said of the league, which can suspend Brooks or place him on the commis- sioner's exempt list. Coach Jim Tomsula said "everybody is on the same page" in how the 49ers have excused Brooks from team activities. Brooks has been en- rolled in the 49ers' player- engagement program since they learned of the accusa- tions from a May civil suit against Brooks. "This is not a new mat- ter," Baalke said, repeat- edly during a 30-minute interview with beat report- ers. "This is a new develop- ment within that matter." 49ERS As Brooks awaits fate, other players move on last week at the Wyndham Championship, with two shots to spare. That was pressure. Now he feels as though he has nothing to lose as he tries to get into the top 100 who advance to the second event next week at the TPC Boston. "Last week was an im- portant week," said Vil- legas, who is No. 123. "It hasn't been the best of years, and just to be able to sneak in here and give my- self a chance ... I get off to a good start, and three more rounds to go and keep it go- ing." Levin secured his spot in the playoffs with a 63 in the final round at the Wyn- dham, moving up seven spots to No. 115. Much like Villegas, he felt relieved to have made it to The Bar- clays, and everything else is gravy. He rolled in three early birdies and dropped only one shot on a mild, blustery day. "This is a nice stress to have," he said. "I'm happy with where I am right now and who knows? Maybe I can keep it going." Spieth has nothing to lose except the No. 1 rank- ing he has held for all of two weeks. With two majors among his four wins, and nine top- three finishes this year, he is No. 1 in the FedEx Cup and virtually assured of getting to the finale at East Lake with a clear shot at the $10 million bonus. He can afford an off week or three. He just didn't like it. Playing alongside Wat- son and Jason Day — the top three in the FedEx Cup — Spieth didn't miss a fair- way on the back nine and was 2 under at the turn, three shots behind Watson. From the fairway on No. 1 to a back pin, he got too ag- gressive and went over the green, leading to bogey. Facing a 20-foot birdie putt on the next hole, he left in woefully short and backed off the par putt twice before missing it. And then he put his next shot in the water. The round ended with another three-putt bogey. Paul Casey and Jason Dufner were in the large group at 66. Day joined Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler in the group at 68. Day pulled out of the pro- am Wednesday after tweak- ing his back. Oddly enough, he had wanted an MRI on his back before the playoffs to make sure everything was in order. Defending champion Hunter Mahan birdied his opening hole and went on to shoot 78.
