timehehastogetridofthe ball," Studer said. "He has a little more confidence in just tucking it and running it. There's nothing open, just tuck it and run." Other strengths among the Cardinals roster are re- turning linemen Matt Ar- riaga and Everardo San- chez. Studer said he also likes what he's seen from 6-foot-5, 205-pound junior Cole Parker. "He plays a variety of po- sitions for us on defense," Studer said. "He plays full- back and runs the ball hard, and he's hard to bring down. We're trying to figure out the best spot for him on defense. He's one of our standouts." In just the short span of practices the Cardinals have had, Studer has al- ready seen improvement from Davila. "He looks better. He's al- ways been really fast and strong," Studer said. "He's improved his quickness. He's improved his ability to catch the ball and im- proved offensively. He still has the same hardcore work ethic." Over the summer, the anticipation for football season to start was ev- ident, Davila said, with plenty of players spend- ing their summer vacation working out in preparation for the season and taking part in camps. "We have a lot more kids participating in the summer practices we had going on this year," Davila said. "We want to come out here and make this team the best we can because a lot of this team is seniors." Corning's first game is at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 4 at home against Las Plumas. "Throughout high school, this is probably the best we've been," Davila said. "I can't wait to see what we can accomplish during the season." ConnectwithSports Writer Sharon Martin at 896-7778. Corning FROMPAGE1 administration Tom Del- aney and senior vice pres- ident of facilities Cheryl Nichols. Gomes said he took what he had seen work in other sports to design a facility tailored to football. "It was even more than I expected. I can't find more things good to say about it," quarterback Derek Carr said. "I'm thankful to Mr. Davis and his fam- ily to want to do this for us. It just shows the com- mitment to excellence. This place has to be the best around." Del Rio said it was im- portant to have a world- class facility to help the players reach the high level expected of them. Work on the new prac- tice fields began in May, with the fields raised 14 inches to improve drain- age and new grass be- ing brought in from Palm Desert. It also provides a more forgiving surface than the old one affection- ately called "The Rock" by players. "I think replacing 'The Rock' was huge," Del Rio said. "We have a couple of excellent multi-directional fields and the drainage is phenomenal." The performance center took 100 days to build — about half of what would usually be expected — and included new work- out equipment, multiple television screens that can be used for teaching, play- ing highlights or delivering motivational messages and the fuel bar. With the dramatic in- crease in equipment, the strength staff can be more efficient with the entire team able to work out at one time rather than in shifts. "It honestly exceeded what we wanted," Gomes said. "Time is probably our most precious com- modity here with the guys so we wanted to make sure we had the space and the equipment to efficiently manage the guys' time." By moving the weight room to another build- ing, the Raiders were able to double the size of their training room and also add a steam room to help play- ers in their recoveries. Notes: • The Raiders signed free agent S Taylor Mays and waived LB Chase Wil- liams. • LB Sio Moore and RB Roy Helu returned to prac- tice after being sidelined with injuries. • TE Clive Walford re- mained sidelined and DE Justin Tuck did not prac- tice after not playing in last Saturday's exhibition game. Raiders FROM PAGE 1 By Tracey Kaplan and Cam Inman Bay Area News Group SAN JOSE In the latest blow to a football team rocked by off-field player misconduct allegations in recent years, Santa Clara County prosecutors Wednesday filed a mis- demeanor sexual battery charge against San Fran- cisco 49ers linebacker Ah- mad Brooks over an inci- dent with an intoxicated woman at a December house party. Prosecutors also an- nounced that a grand jury has indicted Brooks' for- mer teammate Ray Mc- Donald on a felony rape charge involving the same woman after the party at McDonald's San Jose home. If convicted, Brooks, 31, could face up to six months in jail and have to register as a sex offender. Shortly after prosecutors announced the charges, the 49ers said they barred Brooks from participating in Saturday's preseason game in Denver. "We take any charge against a member of this organization seriously and are in communication with the NFL," San Fran- cisco 49ers General Man- ager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "Ahmad is re- turning home to California and will not participate in Saturday's game." Lawyers for Brooks and McDonald were not imme- diately available for com- ment. Brooks was expected to surrender to the sheriff's department late Wednes- day and post bail. McDonald, 30, surren- dered earlier in the day to the Sheriff's Office and was released after posting $100,000 bail. He faces a maximum of eight years in prison if he is convicted of rape and would also have to register as a sex offender. The alleged inci- dent occurred Dec. 15 after a pool party at McDonald's home in the exclusive Sil- ver Creek neighborhood in San Jose. He was set to be arraigned on the charges Sept. 25. In December, the 49ers released McDonald, citing a "pattern of poor decision- making." He was signed by the Chicago Bears, but in May that team also let him go when he was arrested on domestic violence charges after a clash with his ex-fi- nacee in Santa Clara while she was holding their in- fant child. The indictments of Mc- Donald and Brooks are the latest off-field legal devel- opments involving 49ers players. Star linebacker Al- don Smith was released by the 49ers on Aug. 7 after his fifth arrest since 2012, this one for a purported hit- and-run drunken-driving accident. Fullback Bruce Miller pleaded no contest in June to a misdemeanor domestic-violence charge stemming from a March clash with his then-fian- cee at a Santa Clara shop- ping plaza. 49ERS Brooks charged with sexual battery; grand jury indicts ex-teammate McDonald on rape CorningHighfootballplayers,le toright,Everardo Sanchez, Alex Davila and Drew Fissori are set for big seasons and want to make sure the Cardinals have one as a team.
