Ben expresses extreme gratitude to Chuck Safris '63, Jeff Henning '71, and Steve Jones '71 for taking the lead and spearheading this effort. He says he lives by the words of the poem, "The Bridge Builder," that Gamma Pi has adopted, and understands the importance of paving the way for those who follow. "Brotherhood sustains us. We owe it to the next generation. We owe it to ourselves." To contact Ben, send him an e-mail at bendfreese@gmail.com. A s a high school student, Ben Freese '14 didn't expect to join a fraternity, but after sitting down with former Recruitment Chairman Denton Patrick '12 , that all changed. "I could tell right away that Delt was a great group of guys that I wanted to be part of," Ben says. "They were like-minded individuals, but different enough to learn from each of them and grow." After graduating from Iowa State in 2014, Ben secured a career as a real e s t a t e p r o j e c t m a n a g e r w h e r e h e travels often in a consultant role. "It wasn't the classes that got me where I am today," he reflects. "It was the leadership opportunities I took on and the connections I made because of Delt." For some, it may be easy to graduate, begin a career, and move away from f r a t e r n i t y r o o t s ; B e n i s c o n f i d e n t Gamma Pi alumni are different from the average fraternity man. "We must lay the foundation so others will follow," he says. "It is our duty and responsibility as Delts to see this campaign through. We all know that." Gamma Pi is undoubtedly a premier chapter at Iowa State, but this campaign promises even more. The success of the challenge and completion of the campaign will ensure the Shelter is a competitive living facility, and will give future brothers the tools they need to excel academically and socially. "Study space in the old Shelter was non-existent. Now they'll have dedicated study spaces with audiovisual compatibility. GPA will go up solely based on this facility," Ben says. Challenger Encourages Brothers to Step Up "The old man crossed in the twilight dim, The sullen stream had no fear for him; But he turned when safe on the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide." Why Ben Freese '14 Builds a Bridge for Future Delts "'Old man,' said a fellow pilgrim near, 'You are wasting your strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day, You never again will pass this way.'"
